It is has always been my thought that the Cummins TD is an engine that is detuned for pick up use. I am quite sure that with some minors changes that horsepower and torque specs can be raised quite easily.
However, I must say the biggest limitation in all of this is the size and weight of the pick up. You can have tons of horsepower and torque to pull very large loads but you still need to stop. I can remember my first power stroke for in 96 I live on a ranch in San Luis, Colorado and needed to haul some equipment to Taos, New Mexio. We loaded an 145 hp ford Tractor 4 wheel drive this is the type that has 4 rear wheels and weight over 20,000lbs, a ton bales of hay on a 30 foot dual rear axle trailer that probably weighed at least 8,000lbs. We pulled it no problem stopping was another matter. I think the market is power with economy. |

If you all look at the F-650 and F-750 trucks, they are cummins 6.7L engines .... No options for their on v8 diesels ....
Here is an example: The F650, Ford F650, ford f650 truck, f650 truck, Ford F650 Super Crewzer, Ford f650 for sale, the f650 .com, ford f650 crew cab, ford f650 pickup, 2006 ford f650, extreme ford f650, custom ford f650, ford f650 specs This alone tells all ! As Garlic says, reason semi's are 6's and not v-8's ![]() Cheers all.

The cummins will smoke them both, they just won't let it go. Ford and Duramax engines have long been De-tuned. This keeps the market more fair I guess. Ever wonder why each year all trucks have similar power and torque. The 7.3 Liter can produce an easy to attain 750 Horses yes horses just with tuning alone. They were all detuned and controlled. Why is Diesel fuel the most expensive fuel now. My point is that someone or something controls it outside of our means. If you look at all the power and torque in Ford and Duramax, look also at the complexity of the engines. Ford has TWO cooling sytems, one for engine and the other for the TURBO and Trany. No stick available, Duramax is complicated as well. Both use Eurea for catylist as well. THEY do not however reveal rear wheel horse power and If you notice, the trannys are how they are gatting the real fuel milage.I expect a 7 to 8 speed soon. All of the DPF and emission junk in other words are eating alot of horses. Why do you think the Litre size of the engines are growing again. A 5.9 cummins can be tuned to PUT 750 Horse Power TO the WHEELS. That is roughly 860Hp and some change at the block. It is all a shell game, just look through the years and see if you notice what I have. P.S. start from 2003 with them all and compare year to year, you'll see!

I was a Ford owner for 30 years and never though about any other brand until that 2011 Ford came out, first off that is the most homely looking thing I ever saw and the new diesel, well let's just say a company that has gone from the 7.3 to the 6.0 to the 6.4 and finally the 6.7 just seems like they cannot get it right and going from Navistar to making their own engine seems funny but the Dodge has stuck with Cummings and have had only a few changes from what I have found.
Plus all that Eurea stuff, no thanks. Ford told me that only they could put in and that it would be done when it was in for oil change, they did not have a price at the time, but the real deal killer was that Ford has dropped the fuel tank size to 29 Gallons, now I do not know about you but when pulling a 49 foot fiver I do not always want to watch the gas guage and worry about my next fuel stop. The 2008 F350 I had was worthless on fuel milage, I really doubt that the 2011 will be much better when pulling big loads!!!! |

Hot Rods is a very good description, I dont runn the 1/4 mile with my truck, I perfer a torque range that comes in at 1200rpm when I need it, not 1600 0r 2300rpms. The power race is all about selling trucks. Did they compare overall fuel miliage, 6cyls vrs 8clys?

I looked at "other" trucks recently and Jydawg was right .... damn scary under the hood. The idea of removing the cab to do major work is really bad ! They have all gone way over the edge and failed to follow the "KISS" principle ! Lets face it, it is not all about horsepower and torque, service and reliability is an important thing to look at. Nearly 40 percent less moving parts in an inline engine and easy to service ! Take that any day and if I want more horsepower, can tune that in and know the engine will still be reliable and easy to service !
Also as I pointed out earlier, if you want a F650 engines options are still CAT or Cummins 6.7L ..... Wonder why they do not use their V8 6.7 .... LOL ! Noticed how the Dodge commercials are changing ? Now they are pointing out the fact that the many emergency services, rescue, military, and marine vehicles / boats / ships use Cummins engines. That same engine is in the Ram truck ..... Love it ! The "others" can not claim that ![]()

I have owned Fords for over 34 years. I purchased a new 2005 F350 6.0 Diesel. What a mistake. Ford would not do anything for me when my head gasket blew. I had the truck in for service at 48,000 miles and there was white spray marks by the degas bottle. They told me that is nothing. At 61000 miles it was bad and they charged me $175.00 to tell me my head gasket repair would cost me $4000.00. I has spent $400 for the repair for the intake tube blew off the manifold. All new brakes and rotors. The trans went also! This keep getting more expensive every month.
I went and took a test drive in a Dodge 2500 Diesel. That day I came home in my Dodge and never again will I ever own a Ford. I feel like I went from a piper cub to an F18 Hornet. I read test results about how better GMC and Chevy is better. After a test drive I had to go to a Dodge Dealer and see how much better they are. The Dodge has better power,ride and it has more options for the money. The Cummins has much better power! Ford makes a new motor every year and when will they get a good one? |
