I would still rather have a puppy FreightLiner Sport chassis.

A factory MC long bed conversion would be cool, especially with a warrenty. Considering it's built on a longer 5500 platform with a MC conversion plus all the extras it may well be a $70-80,000 truck; for that money they need to stick with the Longhorn package as it will be marketed to folks who haul really expensive things long distances.

If you do the basic upgrades (tuner, deletes, CNG conversion) you may be able to get mid to high 20's unloaded, which would make fill-ups less painfull. As for the cheesy tailgate coversion; a factory hauler bed should be offered to eliminate that issue, which is what most people who bought one would probably do, anyway. The one drawback is that would push the price a couple of fill-ups south of $100,000; for that money you could buy a good used class 6 or 7 truck and still have money left over for comfort mods and maintenance.

My overall opinion: nice truck. However, it's for a limited market and would, most likely, be used as a truck as much as an H2 owner with 30's would take their trucks off road. I don't believe this one will come to pass. A much cheaper option is a MC long bed conversion, which could be upgraded to 5500 specs, for a whole lot less cash.

I can only tell you why I would buy it. First of all if I park a baby Freightliner in front of the house, I'll have a $150.00 "Parked Off Truck Route" ticket in the morning. I can get away with the "Pick-up" trucks. Second my 40' Tandem/Dual Gooseneck weighs over 8000 #s with nothing on it. Then we throw up to 21,000#s of steel/lumber/machinery on it. I don't like the 45/5500s (we have a couple in our fleet), the wider track is a bitch in the ruts, Can't really haul any more weight, and can't get it in a Megacab. If Dodge does go ahead with this prototype, I will buy it.

The best change this truck offers is not the long bed, or the fuel tanks. What makes this ride so sweet is the tranny. There are plenty of shops who do the long bed conversion for the MegaCab, and my rig is no exception for the long haul with a three tanks, 35g primary, 76g ancillary tank, and a 150g transfer tank. But how I have considered swapping my 48RFE for the 6-speed Aisin AS68RC automatic transmission. Unfortunately there are so many issues in this swap, it makes it difficult to seriously consider. Don't get me wrong, it can be done, but the ECU and aftermarket programers all have to be customized and the list other considerations goes on and on. So the decision comes down to durability verse driving range. Hence, I am happy and content right where I am with a few tranny upgrades.

Two things I don't like about the Aisin, if it is in "Tow Mode" it will NOT go into final overdrive, and it does not have paddle shift (sequential selector) for control of each gear. If it is in Drive, and you want to downshift, you can sequential go through "Tow" to "Overdrive Off", now you have to move you gear selector lever to "3" dropping 3 gears. This is the 07 version anyway. Other than that, what with no bands to wear and adjust, I'd put it up against the Allison.
