Default Cummins out and Fiat diesels in Dodge trucks?

According to Automotive news our beloved Cummins may be on it's way out of Chrysler products and since they just announced that the Fiat Pennestar 3.6L V6 is going to be used in the Grand Cherokee we may be driving Cummins powered Fords, Chevy's or even Toyota's or Nissans here in the near future.

Under the leadership of Sergio Marchionne, Chrysler Group is unwinding alliances with other carmakers -- a strategy pursued by former owner Cerberus Capital Management.
Instead, Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler and Fiat S.p.A., will rely on Fiat and its suppliers to achieve economies of scale and fill holes in Chrysler's lineup.
In recent weeks, Chrysler has:
-- Severed its alliance with Daimler AG, which supplied Sprinter commercial vans to Dodge. Chrysler says it may bring Fiat-designed commercial vans to North America.
-- Called off a plan with Nissan Motor Co. that would have given Nissan a Dodge-engineered replacement for its Titan pickup and Chrysler a Versa-based small car.
-- Held discussions about canceling its Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance partnership with Mitsubishi and Hyundai. Chrysler uses the partnership's four-cylinder engines, made in Dundee, Mich., in the Jeep Compass and Patriot crossovers and the Dodge Caliber and Avenger and Chrysler Sebring cars.
-- Discussed bringing Fiat diesel engines to North America to replace a Cummins engine for trucks, according to news reports.
Under Cerberus, Chrysler executives traveled the globe to build alliances to compensate for Chrysler's lack of scale. The Marchionne strategy is a clear departure.
By keeping new projects within the Chrysler and Fiat families, the changes should streamline decision-making. But the biggest motivation certainly is lower costs with global platforms.
In July, Marchionne said the alliance will use Fiat platforms, also called architectures, to develop products for North America. And it will develop products for Europe from Chrysler platforms.
With the Chrysler alliance, he said, "We will get to the number that I think is important, which has been roughly 1 million vehicles per architecture."
Chrysler's engineering staff already plans to create a number of vehicles adapted from Fiat platforms. Four-cylinder Fiat engines will be used for the Chrysler Group vehicles developed on the Fiat platforms.
Late this month, Chrysler management is expected to decide what vehicles and powertrains fit into the company's five-year plan.
The economies of scale should give Chrysler more profit potential and competitive prices.
For instance, the 2009 Dodge Sprinter starts at $43,130 including shipping. The possible replacements, the Fiat Ducato and Iveco Daily, cost the equivalent of about $30,000.

How cool would it be to drive a Dodge with a 5 cylinder oil cooled diesel engine? We could call them Dodgveco's? Sorry, me bad, Just had to adlib. Time will tell though, Ford has rights to Cummins and puts them in MD trucks as an option so does Chevy. I wouldn't mine a Mercry Benz in one though. Duetz makes a tuff engine so does Mann.
I believe Ford will be making thier new one in Brazil? They have been making a small displacement 6 cyl in LD apps for a while now.

Another very good reason NOT to buy a Ford. I know, we haven't bailed out Ford (yet) like we have GM and Chrysler, but you would think that folks would soon wake up and realize that a big part of turning this economy around is going to be BUYING automobiles MANUFACTURED in the good ole USA.

Is it possible they are referring to the new 5.0L diesel for the 1500 line being replaced with a Fiat manufactured diesel? Look how it's worded....." to replace A Cummins engine".....as though they are referring to more than one.

I hope this truck lasts a long,long,time... me I will go where the cummins ends up, not that the other company's like mann,merc/benz, and the like don't build a good diesel because they do , they build some of the best out there, but for parts , and being home grown , I think I'd stay with whats here and see what happens, I hope I have a while before I have to go truck shoping again.who knows by then I may want something totaly different , ?

I read something similar over at Truck Trend. They are speculating that Fiat will replace the Cummins with a Fiat in house diesel.

Well these trucks should last a long time (we have a really drive train) and when time does come to replace mine, guess it will not be Dodge (time will tell). Only reason for buying my truck was the Cummins engine. Would have also gone with Caterpillar engine vehicle if the specs where right.

I will never ever deal with Italian engines made for USA market again (used to be a Ferrari/Fiat Mechanic) and the Fiat engines in the USA was a disaster !! Fiat still has NO experience in the USA going about this all wrong yet again ... Our market is WAY different than Italian and UK. Also I will not deal with a V8 diesel, its need to be a simple inline 6 or inline 8. No reason to increase engine complexity by 35% for no real gain in power and economy. Semi's to this day are still all inline engine and still simple to work with. Designers forgot about the KISS principle !! Fords new 6.7L looks like something from HELL, good luck in finding the valve cover !

Lets face it, the reason that Cummins, Caterpillar, and International are the 5 diesel engine manufacturers is because those engine last, economical, and robust !

Cummins will align with someone else and something new will come about. Meanwhile we have to wait and see what stupid things will happen with Fiat. Being one that has a classic Italian vehicle collection and maintain a historical preservation of Italian Innocenti manufacturer, history proves that time and time again, Italian do some really stupid things when it comes to vehicles (makes me said to say I am Italian at times) and its time for them to repeat the cycle .....

Here is hoping for the best, will stop my ranting now

Fiat really has nothing to replace the Cummins in a full size pickup. So, I can't see a change there. It would make no sense from a marketing stand point to make that change. The Cummins following is nothing short of a cult which will follow the engine where ever it goes. If they're going to be in the truck business, they better leave the Cummins where it is. Surly Fiat knows this. Also the North Americans like their big vehicles. When the ecconomic crisis is over, the little pop can cars are not going to look so good!
The Jeep Grand Cherokee offered an MB 3.0 diesel up until 2008.5. But MB wants to offer it exclusively in their suvs. Because the diesel Jeep was so popular, I can see Chrysler wanting to replace the MB 3.0 with another diesel. It would make sense to use a Fiat sourced mill. The Liberty diesel was an Italian engine and has a very good rep, plus the diesel Liberties are holding their value very well. I also think, as do most auto industry annalists, that most of what Chrysler gets from Fiat will be small car lines and small engines.
Just a note. We own a diesel Grand. It is my wife's daily driver and a great vehicle. It gets between 30 and 35 mpg on the highway and 24 to 26 in town. It has had no issues with the exhaust or other emissions. The only complaint that I would have at this point is that the consumable parts are expensive, make that brutal. But I am finding places other than Mopar and MB to buy the filters etc.
It also should be noted that our trucks are assembled in Mexico and we are going to have to get used to components for our vehicles coming from offshore or the entire vehicle being assembled elsewhere. I don't like it but it is reality.
