The truck was designed and built to tow not sit in traffic Idling or just driven 5 miles to work and back in town doing 30MPH. The Turbo has a sliding vane and the only way to keep it clean is to create boost. Cummins 6.7L Turbocharger Information When you don't create boost the Vane gets sooted up so if you don't tow on a regular basis you need to find a nice long on-ramp that leads out onto a major highway so you put the pedal to the metal and create some major boost thus moving that sliding vane.

The other problem with just driving around town is the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter Cummins 6.7L DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF)and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) ) never has enough time to regenerate and get cleaned out. I drive over 100 miles every night mostly on the highway and she regenerates at least once a night and it takes about 15 minutes to complete at 70 MPH with an EGT (Exhaust gas Temp) of 1200 F.

One solution for those that are doing the 5 mile trips at 30 is to run with the engine brake on and the set the manual gear selector to 3 rd or 4th max. You want the revs to be between 1700 and 2000 rpm. This will cause the vane to work like mad and keep things clean turbo wise .... If you are generating turbo vane errors on your ECU, this will help clean things up and force it to work again. However, this will not help the DPF, it will still clog up.

Like Squid said, these new engines and DPF are designed for towing, torque and loads. They run like champs under heavy loads and like it best like so especially on the highway !!

Cheers,
Roberto

Yup, driving like that can get to into a constant regen cycle that never gets clean...lotsa $$$ in fuel cost

SO true !

I really wish Dodge used the DPF unit that is canister based like CAT makes. When it has problems, you can unbolt the v-clamps, slide it apart and wash it out. When clean, slide it back together and pop it all back together. Really nice way to go. I would not be surprised if a retrofit does not come about.

Rather interesting to see how many companies now out there for DPF, especiall for California .... Nearly all of them are CARB approved.

Doing the delete is the best investment I have ever made for a truck.

You will find that most of the people at this forum went into the purchase with their eyes open and bought into the 2010 emissions capable truck. My wife and many others have asthma which is sensitive to diesel emissions. There are plenty of other sites that promote DPF deletes. Why don't you look them up??

Ok first off not trying to start an arguement over this that would be silly.I do have other sites i visit this one i found and thought wow just cummins so i joined with intentions on helping those who wanted to know bout the delete kits not knowing that some individuals dont like the idea of taking the dpf off. If you dont want members to talk about removing the dpf you might want to put something in the sign up process for this site. I did buy with my eyes open i just like to modify to make the truck even better. These trucks actually burn the fuel better than a 5.9 you can put in a shop and close the door and you wouldnt even know by any smell that it was in there now a 5.9 yes. Like i said there are plenty of people out there that like the 6.7 with the delete kit and there are the ones who like there dodge with the dpf in place. I just happen to be one who like it off cause the concept is stupid gas motors put out more harmful emmisions than diesels.

Bigbaddodge, I think you will find this forum different than the others that are out there. This forums seems to be tailored more towards maintaining and getting it to handle the loads its designed for day in and out. This forum does not seem to be much into removing emissions but working with what is there. Which for some of us, its happens to be great, for others it may be a bit of challenge.

Honestly with the new EPA/CARB laws for California which will spread to all the other states in nothing flat, days of DPF removal are gone. The new EPA/CARB laws is retroactive to 1998, which of older engines, it will kill it for sure no matter what (I think the EPA's goal). Those people that have removed their DPF will find that they will have to reinstall them or face stiff fines (state and federal). Its unclear still (I think) what will happen to people that cross state lines, get caught in a road side emission test .... Since their vehicle was 2010 ready, does that mean they required to be in all states even those they visit ??? The next several years will be a stinker till its all worked out (just like the days of cats and egr on gas engines).

Having done tons of work in blue printing and tuning engines, I have found over the many years that you can achive tons of extra power with the removal of the emissions systems very easily. In many cases, our engines burned much cleaner and passed smog with such good low results that testing stations required us to have the test done with three different systems to ensure all units operated as it should. Unfortunately, it raised the cost of the engine alone to some like $15,000 on average .......

We all have to remember that an engine that is very efficient, powerful and clean is very expensive. No one will by it. So manufactures do only what is needed to make them meet requirements and keep the costs down. Everything else is up the owner and 3rd party market

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Cheers,
Roberto
