Default Cummins 6.7L DPF back Exhaust Question Answered

We've all seen the written opinion of other 6.7L owners on the net which says that the DPF back exhaust systems on the market are a waste of $ and only a total delete of the DPF will give you any sort of gains in HP or MPG. Coincidently these are some of the same owners that are now reporting that even with the EGR and DPF deletes they are still getting the same MPG as before?

So yesterday I was tasked with stopping at the local grocery store to pick up some French Fries for dinner and as an award for remembering to be a thoughtful spouse I picked up the new issue of Diesel Power. In this months issue they have a comparison of the 5.9L and the 6.7L. They put the trucks on the dyno in the beginning to get a base line and then they add a S&B intake, Edge juice with attitude and a silverline 4" turbo back system P/N DS105 on the 5.9L and a 5" DPF back system P/N DS109 on the 6.7L.

With the edge set on the stock setting the dyno showed a 64HP and 158 lb-ft of torque gain, a MPG gain and EGT decline with the intake and exhaust.............................. Sounds good to me!

Cool Diesel Power article.

Hi Squid, I read the same excellent article and was glad to find someone finally did a comparison and a step by step evaluation. I just wish the guy with the 6.7 had done a little better job of tracking the mileage results. Did your dealer say anything about warranty and the installation of your Volant CAI?
How do you insure you aren't voiding your warranty with the installation of aftermarket parts? Any info is much appreciated.

I've always been a believer in business relationships. I have a long time relationship with the service manager where I bought my truck. He told me that a cold air system would not void my warranty and that there was a potential problem with the programmer. So, it all depends on how you drive your truck and the relationsip you have with the dealership if you have a problem. Melt a piston with a programmer attached and you've got a big problem. Go into service for some of the common codes, not so much.
BTW, don't do anything without gauges. IMHO, one of the most important mods.

Both I and Vis-a'-Vis have one installed. Mine is installed before the Turbo and I believe his is installed after the Turbo.

Both tell you how hot the truck is running, when you go into regen etc. If I had it to do over, I would put the thermocouple pre-turbo. I was worried about metal chips getting to the turbo.

I installed a temp guage on the outflow tranny line instead of drilling the x-deep tranny pan.

I also added an EGT guage. I have not drilled the exhaust manifold yet. My dealer teck said that his factory contact had been asking if customers were drilling for EGT probe. I simply took a steel worm clamp and went around the manifold and clamped the probe to the manifold. It gives me about 400 degrees at hot idle. I will drill it someday.
