Hey bcguy, when I haul my 5th wheel over the Oregon coastal range there are times I never touch my breaks going down steep grades. If fact it slows down so well I need to hit the “diesel” pedal to gain speed. The higher the RPM the more the break works, so at 3000 RPM it’s holding back really well for me. Tow/haul mode will down shift automatically going down hill or do it manually to get the RPM up.

What I found for myself is lower rpm / speeds and e-brake on is to down shift the tranny to get the rpm up and then it works very nicely. Very important to have rpms up, the closer the rpms drops to 1200, less effective it becomes. At higher speeds and rpm, I am like Jamespi, truck slows down nicely and have to apply gas pedal to either stay at that speed or speed up.
To do be afraid to get the rpms up, the engines likes it and keeps everything working as it should.

thanks for the replies guys,I know it works well when revs are up,but at times I could just use a bit more when I am pulling my backhoe, always use tow haul mode, just wondering,It does kind of shock me that I am the only one who is not 100 percent happy with the hold back, still love it,wouldnt trade it for any one of the competition, cheers

We have several trucks, one of which is an 08 5500... if you have the auto transmission you need to have the truck in tow/haul and the truck should do the rest... we are often at gvw 19500 lbs and have to add throttle going down a 6 or 7% grade in the pacific northwest... my other trucks are 5.9's with the pacbrake.. they are the same...
With my 05 3500 dually we can tow a 15K lb trailer the exhaust brake holds the load, I can't see why you shouldn't be able to do this with the 6.7... I'm sure ours would... If you've got the stick, you need to be 1800 - 2200 rpm for best operation... |
