Default Oil separator project

Hi all,

Started my next new project after discovering on a routine maintenance that my turbo has sucked oil into the intake via the crankcase vent .... new this was going to happen. Oil vapor into the intercooler is very bad, it lowers the efficiency and gets it all nasty in there.

In my case the extra blow by is most likely due to short trips (12 miles a day) during the week days and the rings not seeing enough temp to seat correctly.

So my new project, oil separator for cummins 6.7 ...

What makes a good separator for this engine ? Several things ! This is not a gas engine so it has to be durable, it has to have proper flow, has to be easy to service, and most important, it has to separate !!

Here is the one I am going to use and detailed pics of the break down.

Oil separator unit:

The bottom plug is the drain. The top silver knob is the dip stick, top port is output, middle port is input. The in and out ports are 3/4" like the factory pipes. This is very important ! You do not want pressure to build up in the crankcase !

Dip stick:

Here is the unit with the dip stick removed.

Unit opened:

This shows the collection area.

Unit opened:

This is the unit top. This shows the dual O rings (no gaskets used) and the screens. Some units use a steel wool to trap, other do it with a series of screens. I prefer the screens, easier to clean and get back in and work well.

Overall:

Next, will be working on a mounting setup. Will be installed on the passenger side against the secondary battery box. Plenty of space, nothing in the way and direct access to the crack case tube and turbo intake tube.

More to come ....

Cheers.

Looks like a great set up,keep us posted on the progress for your install, and maybe the part numbers and where to buy? I have 25,000 on my truck and plan on changing the crank case filter at about 30,000 ( should be around spring time ) as I have all my other maint. done till the 30,000 mark... I know the book says something like 67,500 miles or some thing ,but I too am not wanting oil to contaminate the system, I don't run the oiled type air filters like k&n ,for that same reason...looks like your set up would be a nice way to be able to monitor when the filter needs changed....thanks for the info...

I hate you California (And Florida and Texas) guys. You're having fun and I'm freezing my butt off, LOL. Sure looks like it should do the job.

Happy New Year Everyone,

Little update.

Finished the mounting bracket during my vacation ... The bracket is nothing more than a rectangular ali stock that has a matching 1/4 round milled into it that mates against the surface of the separator. Two recessed hole to mount it to the side of the battery box and notch for the 3 inch stainless band clamp. Once mounted, its very sturdy and stable and the separator unit is held in place via the band clamp. The dip stick is very easy to get to for checks.

Here is a pic of the separator mounted:

Here is pic of the hose routing:

Here is a pic of how its tied in:

The goofy clamp job is strictly temporary. Since the hose required is 3/4 inch, you will not find (at least not around my area) 3/4 inch high temp silicon hose at our local auto supply so you have to use automotive heater hose (it has to be ordered).

The plan is remove the crank hose and metal down tube, install the silicone 3/4 inch hose directly into the crank case vent the other end to the intake side of the separator. That will make the hose routing much cleaner back to a total of 4 clamp vs 8.

Hopefully some Dodge Diesel Shop will make this available for others !

Cheers,
Roberto

Side note to this, my crankcase filter has 25K miles on it and its allowing oil to blow by .... There is no way in hell that it can run for 60K plus miles ! Combination short and long runs proves that it does not last 25K miles. The separator now solves that problem. If there is blow by, it will be caught and kept the oil out of the intercooler and sensors !

great install ! the thing will look factory installed when you update your hoses, but looks great as is..( way better than what most around here would do ). where did you get the oil separator its self ? the other components are available around here , I want to put one on mine soon, as I have 25k on it and can only hope its not oiling the system yet.. thanks for sharing your great project! it looks great.

The separator is available from:

Ultimate Oil Catch Can

Its rather expensive however its one of the best one around that has a 0.75 inch intake and output.

I do have to make one correction, silicon hose can not be used since its not compatible with oil unless lined for it. However, you can use and I will be using steel braided oil hose with Earl clamp boots on the ends. Cost per foot is roughly the same depending where you shop for it. Anything that runs over the top of the EGR cooler has to be able to handle high temps.

FYI, I have asked Richard @ GDP to look at what has been done and see if they would be interested in offering a more cost effective kit.

There are many catch cans out there, beware, others have tried and damaged their 6.7L in trying them. Cummins/Dodge did not honor the warranty due to the restrictions caused. This can is full free flow and provides no restrictions except when full of oil and the surface area of the holes in the disks exceeds the surface area of the 0.75" hole in and out.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Roberto

thanks for the info, seems like expensive at first , but when you think about the cost of changing the ccv filter prematurely to keep oil out of the system and not geting the full life out of it for fear of oil contamination, and then the cost to have things that can get contaminated (like a inter/charge cooler) cleaned or replaced its cost looks a little different then at first.... very nice catch can, and its free flow design and features make it perfect for the job IMO , good to know about warranty issues , mine ends at 36,000 any way and I will be on my own after that ,so to me this will help keep repair costs down rather than cause them.. I hope gdp will see the need to offer a kit for such a big market... to me the 6.7L owners are more informed about all the niche things about this engine , but maybe its because we have to be??? not as forgiving as older engines to me??? thanks again!!!

A status update.

Installed the correct hoses today so everything looks OEM and its all nice and clean and all the clamps are gone (geez I hated that, yes, I am OCD).

Thought I would open the canister and see whats going on. Very happy I installed the separator ! Oil is collecting (for 2500 miles, its was 1/16th of an inch), the screens are preventing it from going any further. The hose from the canister to the intake was dry and clean, so was the turbo.

I find the crank filter is just not working as well as I thought. I have 27K miles and oil vapors are coming through too easily. The filter new is most likely effective, however as oil being to collect, it looses effectiveness. Replacing the filter something like everything 10K miles is not cost effective either and a pain.

Will post updated pics later

Cheers all.
