Default Grid heaters

Finally, someone developed what I was thinking of doing !!

Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail

Removing the grid heater from the manifold and placing it somewhere that does not diesel soot !!

This now paves the way for a ported air horn, retain all the smog junk, and have added preformance by un-restricting things.

Very nice, on my list to get !!

Cheers,
Roberto

Pretty nice and at a reasonable price to boot!

OK I'll ask the dumb question since I'm a Music teacher and not a mechanic. Where would this go? I won't even try to assume cause I know what happens when I do that. Looks like an interesting product.

This setup would replace the boost tube going from the intercooler to the intake horn on the engine. It would be a direct replacement of the tube.

So here is what I am thinking of doing. Been chatting with Richard at GDP via email about making a intake horn that looks stock (no colors and has smog ports working) so that one can do the following.

1. Grid delete, removing the grid heater and restriction at the intake manifold using this:
Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail
2. Using a larger intake horn like this one:
Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail
3. Replacing the deleted grid heater with a relocated version:
Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail
When all said and done, that will give better performance and some mileage gain since the restrictions will have been removed, the engine breaths better but the smog stuff still working. Also on trucks that are lightly used, the soot will not build around the grid heater causing it to fail and plug.

As for those of us in California, it will look OEM, function like OEM but better, and visual smog check should not be a problem at all !

Did I say I like my stuff looking OEM ..... Now to count the change in the stash jar .....

Cheers all !

Here is what the intake around the factory grid heater looks like after a small while (picture taken by Richard at GDP and link stolen by me )

According to Richard, this was a low mileage engine ....

I will have to make sure I take pics of mine when opened up !

Cheers,
Roberto

I'm wondering if I did the delete of the grid heater would I even need the relocation in North Texas. What are the ramifications if its gone? Our winters here are sporatic. Guess I need to research more. I like the $200 delete kit. But in North Texas would I really need to replace it? Google here I come.

Well I took a look at the site and as I figured, not smog legal. I also have concerns about the design itself ...

Missed the part where I said "retain all the smog junk" ... That is important to me and I think many others here.

Its a pity Glacier bailed on the production of the horn at a lower cost. Purchasing the "original" model in an OEM looking form seems to be a screaming pain the arse with that company.

Cheers.
