Default Crankcase filter replacement?

How often should these filters be changed out? Mine is supposedly saturated with water. Dealer wants 360.00 to change it out. I have a warranty on this truck. Shouldn't it be covered. Truck has 29000 miles on it....hmmm?

The manual says at 65K miles, however since letting it go that long causes many other problems, overall consensus has been around 35K miles.

Consumable items are never covered under warranty. Buy a replacement from Geno's (best price around) and do it yourself. Take less than 30 minutes and real easy. There is a howto post on the site.

Cheers and welcome aboard !

It appears the engine power train warranty is going to cover this issue...however, new problem; injector pump is leaking fuel on the concrete. Warranty covers this replacement. Why would the injector pump fail after only 28000 miles?

hi....
i purchased an 07 3500 drw 7 mo. ago and im new to diesels. i purchased the 3500 for work (towing trailers occassionaly). i drive a lot of miles on the freeway daily... my truck just hit 67000 mi. and the perform service light came on... not knowing anything about this i googled the problem (which led me to becoming a member of this site (: ) and went to cummins to buy the ccv filter (approx.$80 in bakersfield,ca.) . changed that out by myself according to directions from my new friends on cumminsownerz. easy. i then found out that i would also have to clean the egr valve and cooler, called dodge and they quoted me $650_whoa!!!! thats a crap load of money to clean something.. i understand that its all labor for the most part.... anyway i havent done that yet... just yestarday after towing my trailer out to a field i would be working in my check engine light came on and i think it has to do with me not cleaning the egr valve/ cooler.... please help... i read one of squids post saying that he cleaned the oxygen sensors and that might be the problem but i am not a mechanic by any means....my truck is stock as far as the motor.... ::does any one know of any dodge mechanics in town (bakersfield, ca.) that wont charge outragious like the dealer???

The CCV filter is a 67,500 mile maintenance service item. Most often early saturation is caused by driving with a full air filter. The turbo is going to pull air across the path of least resistance. If the air filter is plugged unfortunately the path of least resistance wound be the CCV filter. There is no entry point for water other than condensation if the vehicle sits for extended periods or does not get fully warmed up. They plug with oil drawn from the crankcase. It is a very simple item to replace.

The second question realtive to to the cost associated with cleaning the EGR is not so simple. It is cleaning the EGR system, pretty much the entire system. It requires removal of the EGR cooler and soaking it in a solution essential containing expensive dishwashing soap. Several sensor ports should be decarboned (with a paper clip), in addition to cleaning the EGR valve itself. There are quite a list of parts number associated with properly performing this service.

In these parts a new CCV filter is about $80 CDN, at Cummins and it is a 20 minute (at most) job to change. I have found that what DodgeServieManager stated is bang on and further to that, if you run an after market air filter or a CAI you need to be checking and cleaning the air filter often. As they fill with dirt, the after market filters are not as forgiving as the stock Cummins filters, when it comes to air flow. I have found this to be true with three different after market filter brands. I find that the after market air filters must be cleaned every 20,000 KMs or the engine will start to suck oil through the CCV. The stock Cummins filter, on the other hand will run 30,000 KMs before replacement is necessary.
As for the EGR/Cooler cleaning, this is a time consuming job that requires removal and reinstallation of the complete EGR system including the cooler, disassembly of the components and an hour of soak time to loosen the soot. But the parts (Gaskets and cleaning fluid) are under $100 CDN, and it can be done by a competent home mechanic.

For the egr and cooler, look on ebay, there are forsale all the bits needed to replace it. I purchased a spare egr and cooler, cleaned / tested it and put it on the shelf ready for service. I just swap them out and clean the removed one when time permits. Total cost for the replacement parts, $120.00 and truck down time is 1.5 hours Best way to go !
