Well I'm beginning to realize that this thread is very old, sorry nubee here. I just realized that I was posting to some very old posts. Anyway!

I did a lot of searches for independent comparisons on intake kits. I have come to the conclusion based on the ones I found that at most you can gain 2% hp and less than 1% or .7% on mpg. Not to mention that the stock filter works better than the kit filters in two ways; it takes much longer to clog and it does hold back more smaller particulate material from entering the turbo.

I have also come to realize that the dodge boys did a pretty good job on the design of the intake. It appears that the restricting factor is the turbo throat. Increase the throat, increase the air flow. The stock set up is only loosing 2% and in some cases is better than some of the aftermarket kits. To the turbo is getting 98% of what it needs.

One other thing that came up in my search was that some of the aftermarket kits with the nice and shiny tubes and or casings increase intake temps above ambient, higher than stock.

All this makes me wonder how these manufacturers can claim a 14-20% increase in HP?

I have been running the S&B CAI for about 25,000 KMs. I bought it so that I have the option of adding a bumper scoop later. It is less $ than the Volant. I did not find any difference in power or fuel economy over the modified stock intake box that I was running before.
To modify the air box, I had cut a 4" hole in the bottom of the stock air box into which I mounted a 4" toilet flange and gutted the intake tube. After trying a couple of drop in filters I went back to the stock Cummins filter because of its superior filter performance. There was no performance/mileage change with the Cummins filter, it flows well. The modded box and air tube was good for about 1.5 to 2 MPG and more turbo whistle.
The truck presently has just under 135,000 KMs on it. Other than the above and an unplugged EGR and 285 tires, it is stock. 'Hope that this helps.
