Default programmer dilemma

hello
I am new to this sight and was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction
I just purchased a new 07 dodge mega cab with the 6.7l cummins engine.
unfortunatly I am not that mechanically inclined, and this new 6.7l sounds like alot of work,, maintenance wise....

I keep hearing all this talk about regeneration in the diesel particulate filter and other things that I am not familiar with, and am wondering if a programmer would help ease the maintenance bit.
but the problem is I cant decide on which programer i should get for my truck.
I need a prgrmmer that will display egt/ boost etc with a gain in hp and torque.
was it a mistake buying the 6.7? or am i just hearing the tiny bad side of an amazing engine.
thanks

Don't sweat it, you bought a great truck, the computer will take care of the regeneration stuff - nothing you need to worry about. From everything I've read the Edge Juice with Attitude is one of the nicer programmers, but it's not a necessity. The truck will probally do just fine for you stock.

Howdy megacab! After 26,000 miles I can honestly say that the maintenance on this truck is no more then any other truck I've ever owned except for the fuel filter that has to be changed every 10,000 miles. You don't necessarily need a programmer in order to see EGT, boost, tranny temp etc. Edge and others out there sell displays that will give you all that information and a lot cheaper then a programmer. If you're looking for added Horsepower, Torque and maybe some MPG then a programmer is the way to go but will also cost you more.

The 6.7 is a great engine but your driving habits will be different than the 5.9.
Here is my list that others may want to add to or not agree with;
Truck does not like stop and go driving.
It is possible to get into a never ending regen cycle.
Don't let the truck idle for long periods of time...some say not over two minutes...without the idle up feature engaged.
Drive with the exhaust brake on to exercise the turbo vanes at least 50% of the time
Don't lug the engine...Keep your low rpm's range around 1500
Get on it from time to time to fully exercise the turbo vanes
Get something to tell you the egt and boost...Programmer or gauges

You see, you have entered the world of the bluetech diesel and this is the true difference between the 5.9 and 6.7 other then a whole bunch of power and stuff like bore, stroke etc. IMHO

Good job Vis-a'-vis, Pretty much my perception. My driving habits are difficult to change with the lugging of the engine, I am still learning how to get the most out of the 6.7 in stock trim and actually it's alot of fun. The 96 with the gasser in it and the 47RE, I have a BD trans lock installed and it attempts to keep it in lock up on de-cel and light throttle accel. The V-10 got the best mileage at 65, 4th locked up so we learned to drive it that way towing and empty, the 07.5 likes some RPM's when towing and the trans will keep the RPM's low unless you give it a lot of throttle. We are learning how to manipulate the up and down shift switch for minimum shifting and optimum RPM's and mileage. By the way the 96's transmission has never been out of the truck and has never given us any problem in 170,000 miles (15K Syn. trans fluid changes and a very light foot) Yes it has towed and alot too, about 75% of it's life with 10K in tow. So the learning curve continues.

I had the Edge EZ on my 06 and was a great box. After my experince with the MP8 I would sure stay with the Edge.

What is the "idle up" feature? This not wanting to idle more than 2 minutes is crazy. Like I never drive in a cold climate but what if you stop for an hour or so and want to stay warm. Same with A/C in a hot climate.
