I've been doing some research but haven't been able to find an answer to this question:
If I remove the butterfly itself and leave everything else in the TV will I still get a CEL? If so can anybody tell me why? Is there a sensor that detects TV position like there is for EGR position? Thanks.

No. If you remove the butterfly, no cel no errors. There is no sensor that detects an actual device. The sensor is a positional one inside the electronic of the TV. In pre-2008 models, this was a requirement in order to disconnect the EGR. The valve was normally closed so disconnecting the EGR caused a bad restriction since the valve would not open. Later in 2008 they made it normally open and close when EGR was activated.
Rule of thumb, if a motorized device (actual motor or solenoid type) that more than 2 wire, then there is a built in position sensor and it will report back to the ECU. Hope that helps.

Thanks morbius. I was hoping so. I want to block the EGR but leave all the electonics and manifolds intact so I don't get all that crap back into the intake and avoid cel at the same time.

What I would first before going that whole route is to simply unplug the egr and see how the truck runs with your ECU. I see you have a 2008, so TV should be normally open. If your DPF regen works as it should for many miles, then putting a block plate at the source of the EGR would do the trick (easy to install and remove when needed). No need for a lot of extra work

Thanks for the infor. I recently unplugged the EGR, but I was hoping to block it and then plug it back in while eliminating the butterfly to get rid of the CEL. I could live with it, just trying to see if I can fool it.

I have mine removed, but I'm using the H&S tuner. You can remove all the emission equipment and leave it unplugged. If you don't have a programmer, you have to leave everything plugged in.
