Default Ram 3500 4X4 front axle U-joints bad

Started hearing an intermittent clunk from the front end last week and sure enough the U-Joint on the passenger side is shot after only 95,000 miles. I can't help but wonder why the U-joints on this truck don't last?

The good news is I have a 20 ton press so with the help of the manual and the thread by Morbius it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Front axle u-joints real easy. Be careful though, real easy to alter the spacing in joint area. Measure before and after before re-installing so the opening stays the same. If it decreases, the u-joint will bind.

Cheers.

I just bought the U-joints from Autozone for $16 a pop since it seems that no matter what brand they don't last long. I also had to replace the drivers side wheel hub assembly since it separated while removing it from all the road salt used here in the winter. Picked up the Timken Wheel Hub Assembly from 07 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 Wheel Hub Assembly - Driveshaft & Axle - Timken, National, Front - PartsGeek for $205.

My next truck will be taken apart as soon as I get it and Anti Seize applied knowing what I know now. Even the U-Joint clips were rusted solid and I thought I'd never get the Rotor off the passenger side .

If I had known the bearing came apart, I would have made mine available. They have 35K miles in top shape, not planning ever going back to them, love the full float in the front.

Sorry you had a hassle getting it all apart.

Thanks bud, I'm going your route on my next truck.

The really sad thing is that now that I've replaced the drive shaft, tires, front u-joints and wheel hubs I guess I'll be keeping this one for another year or two.............oh well wonder what the 2012 or 2013 trucks will be like?
