Default Emergency towing.

I am a little confused about the proper procedure to tow a Dodge 3500 4x4. In the manual it states that the transfer case should be in neutral if one set of wheels are on the ground. I recently lost all power and had to get towed to a dealership by the 24 hour roadside assistance service. The batteries were completly dead, the shifter was in park and the transfer case was in 2-wheel Hi. The tow truck lifted the rear of the truck and towed with the front wheels on the road. Is this the correct procedure or should the transfer case have been shifted to neutral? I told the tow truck driver what it says in the book and he just said "the book says a lot of things". Maybe the transfer case only has to be in neutral for AWD vehicles using the NU244 Geni transfer case. Does anyone know the answer to this?

The towing procedure is for either rear wheels or all fours wheels on the ground. 2W HI is basically neutral for the front axle which means lifting the rear up and towing as such was good, no harm to the vehicle drive train. Towing as it was done, gear oil in the front axle and oil in the transfer case kept things lubed. Hopefully the tow truck picked up the rear by the wheels and not with chains on the axle and sling on the bumper ..... that is usually bad.

AWD drives vehicles requires a flatbed, no towing on a single axle. Dodge Ram trucks has no AWD setups, its either 2 HI or 4 limited use.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

Thanks Morbius, that's what I wanted to hear. My vehicle was lifted by the rear wheels while being towed. The owner's manual does not explain it as clearly as you have.

Canuck,

Glad I could have been of help. Glad to hear it was towed via the wheels and not a sling.

Cheers.
