Default 68RFE service

I am having the transmission serviced this week and had a thought/question.
When did the torque converters stop having drain plugs in them or am I mislead by my dealer? They stated that they only drop the pan on these transmissions for servicing, and change the filters of course. any thoughts? or are they just lazy. The dealer offered me a deal that I could not refuse for doing the service work, I needed to drop it off any way for the high idle activation.

I think they are right. I believe that there is a way to pump the fluid out but I'm not sure on that one. I'm having my truck serviced Saturday by a local shop. I'll ask. How many miles do you have now??

About 21K, I asked about a harsh 3-2 downshift (The bucking we have discussed) There is a flash for it, had it done and the shifting is alot different. I can't tell if it is good or bad yet only had it done yesterday. But I do believe it fixed it. Also had the high idle enabled, That is so cool!! It works great. $202 for trans (as per dealer with filters(2)) and MOPAR LOF, I don't feel that was too bad. I'll keep you all informed.

So, how is the flash? What have you noticed about the shifting?

I asked the same thing when I got my Nissan Titan and found the dipstick bolted down. When I talked to the tech and then got ahold of the manufacturer of the tranny they both said the same thing. Todays fluids are so good and throw in the computer control and you should never have to change the fluid as long as it doesn't get dirty thus the bolt on the dipstick to keep people from dirtying up the fluid. The Titan tranny doesn't even have a filter.

Mopar transmissions have not had torque converter drain plugs since the 70s and that is too bad. As far as service goes, I believe that fluid is much cheaper than a rebuild. I have always changed the fluid in my tow and offroad vehicles at least twice a year, more often if there is any discoloration. I have never had a trans failure doing this. Of course, the earlier Mopar truck, Jeep and car auto trans should have the bands adjusted at the same time as the the fluid and filter change. All electronically controlled Mopar trans should use only ATF+4 fluid and preferably Mopar brand.
My truck has the 68 RFE. With 36,000 kms on it (about half of which was towing) the fluid and filter have been changed once last spring before the trailer season started and will be changed again at 40,000 kms. I do not believe this BS about life long fluid. Even if it is still clean trans fluid loses its lubricating ability over time and mileage because just like engine oil, the additive package breaks down. Just MHO.

Just send in a fluid sample for analysis and there isn't any guessing. By doing this I found out in my Titan I could go 13,000 miles between oil changes using Mobil1 extended, sure beat the heck out of 3000 mile changes when you drive over 4000 miles a month most of the time. I also sent in a sample of my tranny fluid at 60,000 miles and they found no problems with it and I'm now at 115,000 miles and will send another sample in at 120,000.

As for this truck, I just went over 40,000 miles in my 3500 and plan to do the same thing when I hit 60,000 miles.

Hey Garlic!
How is the shifting after the flash? Mine does a bucking, not sure if its the 3-2. Does anyone know if the flash from the dealer costs anything?

I bet that the dealer/shop didn't even blow out the transmission lines, cooler and heat exchanger? More often than not, its just to replace the filter. If you fluid is burnt out, you'll have more maintaince to worry about. I do my own maintaince when ever I can.

Most aftermarket converters have drain plugs.
