Default Fuel Filter

Alright guy's I have read some of ya'll post where ya'll were changing the fuel filter every 10,000 miles and going with a smaller micron ratings? I have 65,000 miles on my truck and have never changed the fuel filter, why are ya'll changing them so much? And what is wrong with the 7 micron rating unless you are burning alot of bio-diesel?

The new filter, which is a re-useable canister/element offers filtering to 5 microns. The old 7 micron throw away type has been discontinued by Cummins. Many guys are running secondary or after market filters which clean the fuel to 2 microns. Around here, it's not uncommon to come across bad, dirty or watery fuel, so as a precaution, I change my fuel filter element (went to the new style at 20,000 kms ago) every 20,000 kms. It just ain't worth extending the change for the sake of $30.

I have installed an additional 2 micron Cummins filter so what comes from the tank is filtered down to 5, and what hits the CP3 pump is filtered down to 2. Here is the original post on the install: GDP Fuel Filter Installation

These engines usually have multiple oil and fuel filters. Dodge for what ever reason decided to deploy them with single oil and fuel filter, bad idea I think. I change the 5 micron every 10K miles and the 2 micron every 25K miles. A plugged injector or damaged CP3 pump, you are talking about $1500.00 repairs to start with and Dodge has declined some people's warranty work because of bad fuel loads.

As DWR mentioned, just not worth it for the cost of a better filter and changed ahead of schedule.

If you run lots of bio diesel (especially above 10% cummins rated level), you should run multiple water separator units of good quality. The stock unit on the 6.7 is not that good and the 6.7 is sensitive to water content.

Default GDP fuel Filter Install

I am curious. How much does the GDP filter kit cost and where do you buy it. Also did you notice any improvement in performance, seeing how the lines are larger and would be less restriction

You will find it here:

Glacier Diesel Power - Product Detail

The filter is not installed for any kind of performance gain, its to filter down to a level that is safe for the high pressure pump and injector. Also it does remove a restriction that is standard on the 6.7. So that results in better flow from the factory filter to the pump but with the factory lift pump still in the tank, you talking enough to see the benefits.

Just changed my filter at 11,000 miles and certainly it had filtered a lot of crap.

I had a 96 7.3 ford before and kept it for 300,000 miles. Always changed the fuel filter around 10,000 miles never had any problems.

Is this GDP filter farily easy to install and does it affect warranty?

Thanks

Very easy to install, including the added steps I went to make it look OEM. Does not effect warranty to the best of my knowledge (at least our dealers has been happy about with no complaints, same applies to oil bypass filters). It is a Cummins factory filter.

One thing that people do not know and Dodge says nothing about, warranty does not cover damages from fuel contamination. A lot of people are finding that out the hard way on the 6.7's and the repairs bills in are the about mid 4 figures.

Hope that helps.
