Default Cummins 6.7L 2nd Oil Change in 7,700 miles

Well I had the Annunciator inform me again that I need to change the oil right at the 7,760 mile mark. Seems early considering that I just changed it at the 2,200 mile mark considering that I drive 80% of the time on the highway rather then in town so I'm going to send in the first oil sample to see how the Cummins liked the Castrol TECTION EXTRA that i put in her last time. I should have the results back in a week or so.

The bright side I knew how to get rid of the annoying warning this time. Key on (Don't start the truck) push the accelerator pedal to the floor 3 times, key off.

Did my first one at 4,400 and whoever decided to put the oil filter where they did should be beaten. I had to remove the wheel well shield to finally break mine loose and get it out. Lots of hard A/C wiring right there too. The oil filter location is about the only thing I miss from my 6.0 PowerStroke.

On the bright side, went to Harbor Freight yesterday and got a set of oil filter removal tools that slip on the bottom of the filter and you can use a 3/8 drive ratchet with extension to remove it. I haven't used it yet and you know how Harbor Freight tools can be, but it gives me hope for the next time.

I think most people that do their own oil changes have problems with the first one as the filter has that clear coat "stuff" sealant on it. I don't do my oil changes for a number of reasons - like no time, no garage in the cold weather, no way to get rid of used oil and I like having the paper trail with the dealer doing them. Plus I'm usually changing it every month at minimum at 10k mile intervals. My overhead usually wants me to change the oil at almost exactly 7,500 miles.

I don't do my own any more either. The dealer sends my coupons for $49.95 for LOF and safety inspection. Can't seem to find a better deal than than that locally. They also give me the option of using my own oil if I choose it. Besides doing it for 30 years makes me not want to do my own.

For me it's about necessity/convenience. I work nights and live out in the boonies which makes going to the dealership a 100 mile round trip. Add up the time, lost sleep, fuel used at $3.59 a gallon and it's a lot easier and cheaper to do it myself. I jump on the Harley and make a trip to the dealership every 3 or 4 months and buy a slew of filters and I dump the old oil into used ERA containers and then whenever I make a Lowe's run on a Saturday I just drop them and the oil filters off at the Autozone.

As for warranty concerns I staple all the receipts into the appropriate page maintenance log.

I want to meet the individual who actually installs and tightens the oil filter at the factory. I'm gonna' beat him like a rented mule! I'm gonna' hit him so hard his dead relatives will say ouch! I have actually torn those new filters apart trying to get them off!
True story: I once had to coast 2 blocks down hill to the service station in order to have the crew chisel the thing off. Not to mention the lovely location of the thing.

Thanks again Squid for the info on resetting the annunciator. mine also came on at 7,760. The first oil change was at 2,000 mile mark but I didn't reset anything.

Thumbs down what a place to have the oil filter

My 2008 truck just got its first oil change at 5,000K,It took me over a hour to remove the filter,i tried the filter cap wrench ,with no luck.finally I had to punch a hole through the filter and use a 2 x 2 to pry the filter off.I have never seen a filter that tight.I wish I can meet the individual who actually installs and tightens the oil filter at the factory. I like to ring his neck so that he remember the next time he installs a filter he wont over tight it again
