I have an 09 Ram 1 ton with a Delta low profile toolbox that has a space under it of 7 1/2 " x 17" x 58". I would like to find a steel, alum, or plastic fuel tank that would fit into this space to carry extra fuel. I have looked around some and can't find one of course to fit these dimensions so I am thinking about just making one. Anyone have any ideas where to buy or tips on making one?
I found a plastic marine tank that comes quite close to these dimensions that would hold 25 gallons and has all the plumbing points etc. If these are strapped down are they legal to use as I am thinking about? What kind of fuel transfer system do you recommend? Gravity, pump, auto gravity, etc. etc. |

I decided to build my own being I only had 7 1/2 inches clearance under my toolbox and didn't want to loose the clearance for my fifth wheel hookup. I ended up buying an installation kit from Adapter Kit Ford & Dodge (011025)
This allows me to cut into the main fuel tank fill hose underneath and insert the T fitting. It has a built in roll over relief valve. $60. I next measured carefully under the toolbox to get the most size I could get. I went around and found a metals distributor and they cut me the two bottom, and four side pieces and two inside baffles. I bought this in .125 alum mill finish. They also cut me one piece of 1/16 Diamond plate to cover the front that shows under the toolbox. Mill finish much cheaper. $200 I then ordered from Boyd Welding (Boyd Welding LLC - Custom Aluminum Fuel Tank - Fuel Cell - Diesel Truck Tank - Transfer Tank) a filler neck and vented fuel cap and had them weld an extension to the fill cap so I could mount it coming up through and inside of my toolbox. Lockable and out of sight. I drilled some holes inside, one down to weld to the top of the fuel tank and a couple others for venting. I also ordered four 3/8 inch alum fittings from Boyd that weld onto the side of the fuel tank. One for fuel delivery to the fuel filler T. One for future venting if I think it is needed. Two welded on, one top one bottom, for a sight glass so I can see the level of the fuel. (clear plastic hose) $30 I have a neighbor that owes me a little work that has a Mig welder. He will weld it up for me with me buying him a wire spool and some argon gas. Est around $50. I am buying the brass fittings for the hookup to my fittings which will be about $30 locally. Once built I will lift the toolbox up, sit it back down over the fueling inlet, shim if necessary for height and bolt he toolbox and fuel tank down. (tabs welded on fuel tank to bolt to bed.) I believe this all adds up to about $370. Add another $30 for misc. and I will be in it for about $400 which is about half of what you can buy one for. |
