Default Towing RV or trailer over 10k

I suppose you all know that USDOT regulations require a class "A" drivers license (Not CDL) if your RV (5th wheel) or trailer weighs more than 10k.

In California, here is how its written:

Quote:
CDL Exceptions Exceptions to the CDL requirements are:
  • Persons exempted under Health and Safety Code §25163.
  • Persons operating a vehicle in an emergency situation at the direction of a peace officer.
  • Drivers who tow a fifth-wheel travel trailer over 15,000 pounds GVWR or a trailer coach over 10,000 pounds GVWR, when the towing is not for compensation. Drivers must have a noncommercial Class A license.
  • Drivers of housecars over 40 feet but not over 45 feet, with endorsement.
  • Drivers of only fire fighting vehicles or buses used to travel to and from the scene of any emergency situation. Drivers need either a Class A or B license with a fire fighter restriction. A fire fighter may add a “P” endorsement if the bus is owned by a federal or state agency, a city or county fire department, or a volunteer fire department and when the driving is restricted to operating buses as defined in VC §15250.6(g). All fire fighters, whether they have a CDL or a Class A or B fire fighter-restricted driver license, are subject to commercial driver sanctions.
  • A fire fighter with a restricted license who transports compressed air tanks for breathing apparatuses that do not exceed 2,500 pounds.
  • Noncivilian military personnel operating military vehicles.
  • Implement of husbandry operators who are not required to have a driver license.
Bullet #3 is the catch, and everyone I ever talked misses it.

Wish I never gave up my various classes, but then, never thought back then I would have a use for it again .... Oh well

Good news for California, your vehicle and trailer is not tagged differently (if memory serves correctly), so unless you have a moving violation or showing just cause, will not get pulled however .... At least that is what I keep telling myself

Do not know about the rest of you, but when I purchased my 3500, CA DMV sent me a notice about acquiring a special permit that charges me CA fuel tax for purchasing fuel out of state while working ...... Now I do not know about you, but the hell if I am going to pay california an additional tax (on top of my already HUGE yearly tax bill) on the fuel I purchased in another state while working there or driving through it !!

What percentage of owners do you all think actually have a class A license?

I would figure less than 10%, and they probaly don't know about those rules. I have a friend that has a class 8 Volvo Toter home (42ft er) and tows a ~38+' car trailer with 2 race cars, a Miata, a golf cart and a 1 ton Ford passanger van with a lift gate and a hot air balloon (all inside of the trailer) I do not know if he even has an endorsement for air brakes. He puts 50,000 miles a year on the rig too.
