Exclamation Overloaded or not? That is my question.

I have a 2008 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 LB with the 6.7 CTD. The truck is stock except for the 5,000# Super Slides I added. GVWR is 9000# per the door sticker, with a capacity of 1980#. My last TC weighed 2640# fully loaded. Total wet weight on the Dodge = 10,100. My new TC, which I bought today, comes in at a total wet weight of 11,100#, which doesn't include luggage and pots n pans (figure 500#). This brings me to a 11,600# weight. This is 128% of the GVWR for the truck. Am I in trouble? I don't know since I haven't gone anywhere yet. However, since I added the additional springs, my truck is the equivalent of the 3500 model, which has a 10,100# GVWR; by this measure I think I am at 112%. Does this make sense? Do I need to make any changes to my setup? By the way, before I bought the new camper, the best weight figure I could find appeared to be 2900#. I sure erred. (Of course, my wife is now upset since she thinks I bought a TC which is way to heavy for the truck. Is she right? I would appreciate your input.

From what i am looking at on New Cars, Used Cars, Car Reviews and Pricing - Edmunds.com the 2500 is more than capable to tow up to 13, 350 lbs., on Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum, they are saying 13,600.

I dont think you are just yet, but you are getting close.

I guess I need to clarify that I am carrying the truck camper, not towing it. Towing my limits are 12,800# for the trailer/boat/etc. with a combined GCWR (truck, load, & boat/trailer) of 20,000. My concern is for the load on the truck. The CAT scales showed: front axle 5040#, drive axle of 6060# and Gross weight of 11100#. Should I add either Sumo or airbags to my setup? Or bite the bullet, take the loss, and sell the truck camper then find another unit which is much lighter.

If this is a new TC I'm surprised they would sell you one that's too heavy for your truck. With that said I have friend who did have to move up to a 3500 due to the weight of his TC. I'm going to try and get ahold of him since he seems to be more savvy when it comes to bed weight and see what he says.

I doubt the truck won't be able to handle the weight but if you have an accident with someone else you might find yourself liable.

Member Cumminz posted some good info here and Make sure you are legal while towing and here's a pretty good site that may answer some more of your questions. David's RV Tips

Harry, You're overloaded, but you could make up the difference with shocks/springs/bags etc. I'd be more worried about enough WHOA not GO. What have you got for brakes on that 2500 Quad Cab? My 3500 Dually has monster brakes but I'm not sure how much less brake they put on the 2500.

Shocks springs and bags don't mean anything if your tire rating says you can't carry that wieght.

The brakes on the 2500 are the same ones used on the 3500. The only difference between the 2500 and the 3500 is the 3500 has an additional leaf spring, which is installed as an overload spring. I installed 5000# Super Springs when I bought my last camper. BTW: the camper weight on this new unit is posted as 2900#, but it actually weighs 3640 when completely loaded with water and propane. I am installing a Hellwig Big Wig sway bar and plan to upgrade the tires, probably to 18" since they have some 3650# rated tires available. I may talk to the RV dealer about this unit since I couldn't weigh it before I bought it. It is a Snow River 8' and is in primo condition. My wife is not happy with me right now since we thought it was within the weight limits. Thanks for your input.

I don't see you hurting the truck but I do wonder about liability in the event of a wreck?
