I guess the $50,000 question is why tag your 1 ton as a 1/2 ton in the first place? Here it's the same price at registration time.

I tagged it for 10k because I only tow and RV and I don't need anymore. 10k covers my truck weight. 20k tag is twice what a 10k tag is.

here in Illinois the regular truck plate is only 8,000lbs. and the next plate up is like 12,000lbs. but it costs alot more and you can only go 55mph on the high-way with them, not the 65mph posted limit, but the limit for rv's , trucks w/trailers, and semi's. I don't haul much "in" the truck that is rated at 9,000lbs. and w/9,000lbs. brakes.... so as not to go over the plate limit, the truck is rated to tow 12,850lbs. and the trailer can haul 12,000lbs. but the only plate close is 14,000lbs. and it too is much higher than most trailer plates, and more and more they are looking at pick up trucks like mine to see if they are over , not just the people that use them for comercial use, and I have been thinking of getting on a local scale to see how close I get to being over on anything, I think they need to update how they do the system. now days with trucks being able to safely haul more than in say 1955,(or when ever they were last looked at,) that it should all depend on the truck and trailers and or equipments, wieght rating (they will look at your hitch/reciver and ball etc. rating too and see if they are rated enough as well) than some number they pulled out of the air and attached to a license plates asigned wieght, it don't seem fair or logical scince none of the asigned plates "fit" the wieghts I see in the real world, and the plates don't seem to stop the guy with the 1500 Z-71 that thinks its a "Z-7one ton" towing so much its rear bumper is draging the ground and the front wheels are almost off the ground , wondering why he can't steer or stop, but in the end I may have to get the next plate up and have to live with paying more for plates and go 55mph empty on the hwy,or add to that the cost of speeding tickets to go the speed limit.?
