Default Stock shock absorbers

Hello all. I am new to this forum and new to Dodge diesels, being a Ford truck convert. I just bought a new (96 miles) 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 MegaCab Cummins 6.7, two wheel drive. I got what I feel is a good deal (MSRP was $46750...the dealer sold it to me for $28500).

Anyway, I love the truck, except for one issue: the front shocks seem to be having a tough time controlling the front springs. Has anyone else had any issues with weak performing front shocks?

I am giving strong consideration to replacing all 4 shocks with new Bilsteins, as Bilstein is having a buy 3, get the 4th shock free special sale.

I appreciate the forums input, and thanks for creating a fine forum.

Perry

Can't help you with the shock issue since I own a solid axle 4X4 but I will say that stock sucks and I too am looking into upgrading the suspension. Since I live out in the country I'm going to go with more of a performance setup but haven't really narrowed it down yet.

Oh I almost forgot, welcome aboard and stay active...........

Having dealt with so many times and about to deal with it for my truck also, here is what I recommend.

1. Go with something that is gas based not hydraulic, gas offer a better performance and feel without the jerking/jolt feeling.

2. Go with something that is adjustable externally. The adjustable valve is located on the outside of the shock and accessible without removing the wheels or body parts. There are times when you want to soften the ride out a little or stiffen it a more than normal.

3. Go brand name and check the warranties. It is worth spending a few extra dollars on something that has a good name, good specs, and a warranty policy that does cause a ton of grief on replacement.

4. Get a set of poly bushings to replace the rubber ones supplies. This will add to the performance and better positive feel by making the shocks do more vs the rubber deforming.

Bilstein are good and I would shop around for their higher end units that offer all the above.

Congrats on the price, I got a great deal on mine also. Our local dealer had a loaded 08 6.7L 4x4 quad cab with 8 miles on it, after reviewing their zero sale board for the month, I told them if they made me a good enough offer I would take it. Well after leaving once, they gave it to me at 1/2 off with 7 year warranty on the whole truck

Welcome aboard !

Cheers,
Roberto

Wow Morbius............half price????? I thought $18000 off was good. You got a SMOKIN DEAL!!

I think I will go for the Bilsteins. I may do a front leveling kit too, but the shocks must get done soon, as it feels like the front end is really bouncing on the stock shocks. And I would hate to have the dealer replace them with the same poor performing OE shocks.

I'm also thinking about a set of King or Fox hydraulic Bump stops. King Off-Road Racing Shocks : High Performance Suspension

I would not do front leveling. The reason the truck sits high in the rear is for weight hauling. Leveling it out unloaded will create problems when loaded and the truck will not behave correctly if not also cause issue in the geometry change. When I load my dually to max, its as level as it can get and handles very nicely

Yeah killer deal, even the wife was not able to pass this one The dealer was hurting and cost of diesel at $4.95 worked all in our favor

Cheers,
Roberto

Well......the deed is done! My son and I installed the Bilstein replacement shocks this afternoon. All I can say is WOW!!!! The improvement is night and day. The ride is much more composed, it absorbs the small bumps far better (minimizing the skitish feeling of the front end), and over bigger bumps it stops the bounce in one bounce, where before it would bounce 3-4 times. If you have not already done this modification, I highly recommend it. That being said, if anyone needs stock shocks for a 2007 Mega Cab 2500 2 wheel drive, you are welcome to mine for free. They have 847 miles on them. I really don't want to ship them. If you are in SoCal we can make arrangements for a meet & drop. I'll keep them a week if someone wants them, otherwise they will go in the basura (trash).

Where did you end up getting your Bilsteins from? My truck has been handling horribly when hitting bumps, almost bounces me off the road! This is a mode I need to do.

Pa Bird Man,

I bought the Bilstein's at Shox.com. Very fast shipping and a good price. The total with tax was $262.30, and shipping was free. I am very pleased with the shocks.

Thanks for the info, while searching I found them online at donssport.com for $215 with free shipping, ups tracking number they sent me says I'll have them before the weekend. I hope they give me the same results that you have. Anything to watch for when doing the install or did it go pretty smooth. I know most shocks are easy too change out.
