Default Air ride 5th wheel and liner

Howdy All,

Finished the last of bed projects on the 3500 and here are some pics.

Installed a hitch rail (royal pain), new liner (duraliner, modular liner) and a new air king pin / gooseneck.

Pics:

With the cover rolled out and sealed ...

Cover open, over view ...

The air ride king pin / gooseneck unit is rated for 30,000 lbs and 8,000 pin weight, contains auto height control and dual pivot points (great for 4x4 and ranch use). The king pin un-bolts out and a gooseneck plate bolts in, thus allowing for more than one purpose. The unit weighs in a 300+ lbs.

Plugs ...

One for the control unit and power to the pump, the other for trailer. All pins wired so plugs interchangeable.

Close up ...

Cutting the mat was a royal pain, left it in the sun till very hot, measured a dozen times (cut once rule) . Once done, slid right into place with a 1/8" gap all the way around the rails.

Very happy with the Duraliner, like the modular approach better the one piece unit. Especially like the rubber mate more, much more comfortable to sit on and work.

Between the air hitch and front of the bed, still have ample room to insert our two large dog carriers for our mastiff with king pin in use

Any questions, let me know, happy to share more about the parts and install.

Cheers all,
Roberto

Here is hoping to that, especially since we are moving tractors, cars/trucks, and farming supplies and hopefully one day, a nice travel trailer

Having driven big rigs, I wanted the same setup but in a small scale and never have to worry about it ever again.

Cheers all.

Hey that looks like what I've been looking for. One of the things I'm going to have to be doing here before long besides the usual moving of livestock is hauling water about 25 miles to where the livestock are pastured and if anyone has ever hauled water in a pan or bucket it doesn't take much to get it moving.

Does the bed liner affect the clamping force for the 5th wheel mounting? What I mean is it looks like the bolts don't cinch up metal-to-metal.

Dale,

The rails are in direct contact with the bed and bolts to the frame, the liner (rubber mat) is cut around the rails. What is not seen, there is a 1/8" gap all the way around the rails from the rubber mat.

It took about a 1 hour to measure, make a template, test, transfer the drawing to the mat and cut it. Its made of tire material with cords internally so ened up using 3 blades to make a clean cut.

Squid,

Yup same here and that is why I went for the dual pivot king pin. More flexibility without twisting the truck. Gooseneck kinda gets you that but I find them a pain vs king pin (just can not get the trucker out of me )

Cheers all.

Morbius,
Sweet!!
I am envious of your install.
I have a Reese 20K in mine (an up grade from my 16K) Dual pivot heads are the only way to go. I did a similar install, on the 07.5, I have a Dodge bed liner, when it finally warps and starts to crack I'll go back to a bed mat. What are you using for air?

Garlic,

Thank you. We using if for hauling vehicles, tractors, livestock, horses, farm stuff, etc. The reason for going air was since the suspension sucks on these trucks, I did not want to invest a lot there and then have to do upgrades on the 5th wheel. Spent the money there which makes the ride very comfortable.

Cheers.

Morbius I'd never seen that liner before but the more I've looked at it the more I like it. I found it online for $400 shipped which makes it an outstanding buy compared to spray or other drop ins and was wondering if that price is about right, thanks. 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 DualLiner Truck Bed Liner

I have a feeling I'll also be asking questions about the kingpin/gooseneck unit in the near future too.

Squid,

Mine was $332.10 with free shipping at XDP DualLiner Truck Bed Protection System . Save yourself 70 bucks for something else

The air hitch came from HitchCrafters Hitch Crafter - Air Ride Fifth Wheel . I also got with the unit the gooseneck plate so I can switch. Its not cheap at $2395.00, however is the best price in its class. The Holland/Binkley king pin head is the best out there (in my opinion)

Hope that helps.

I also recommend a proportional braking controller like Brake Smart or Max Brake. The combination works so well, you will never go back to anything else. If you are interested, I have an extra unit new in the box (posting the forsale area).

Cheers,
Roberto
