What type if scan tool should I buy?

I have an '08 6.7L 3500 which is just about out of warranty. I would like to purchase a scan tool so that when the service light (has came on about 10 times in 2 years) comes on I can see what the problem and go from there. I would like to avoid the stealership as much as I can.
