OK, I was ready to place my order for the Edge Juice with Attitude and the Volant CAI when I decided to do a few more searches on these items. What I read surprised me and made me hold off for now on making these purchases.
About the Edge, the main reason I was going to get it was for better fuel mileage, system monitoring and increased performance. My main concern - depending what level the system is set on the Edge will create more soot causing more regens cancelling out any fuel mileage gains. About the Volant CAI - I've read that the ring (seen in Squids pictures) that is in the factory intake tube is critical for directing air to the turbo and without it you will actually experience a loss of power and surging of the turbo and it definately should not be removed. Does anyone have or know anything about the MP8 system? Is the monitor for the system, and it's capabilities comparable to the Attitude's? Anyone that can enlighten me or that has or uses any of the above I'd like to hear about your experiences with them. Thanks, Mike |

I'm not experiencing any turbo surge or excessive soot but like Vis-a'-vis stated I too am not racing it. I'm using level 1 which is the fuel economy mode and with both the Volant and Edge I'm getting a consistent 17.6 MPG now (I've been up in the 18's on the few tankfuls that it wasn't windy but that's been rare.........it's Kansas after all.) with over 22,000 miles on the truck. (But I'd agree on level 3 or 4 and my foot to the floor there would be more soot generated but you would also have to agree that if you're using those upper levels then MPG is at the bottom of your list of concerns?)
Oh and there has been no loss of power with the Volant. Believe me, I have more low end torque then stock without a doubt and my rear tires are the proof. LOL Maybe what they are saying is that with just an intake alone there would be some low end torque loss? I can't say because I got the Edge first and then the Volant. I do know that on a gas engine when I put a CAI on I did loss some low end grunt but I don't know if it would be the same with a Diesel?

I was driving last night thinking about this thread because something just wasn't right and I figured out was bothering me. The Turbo is ran off the exhaust which is why we're concerned about EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) at shut down so we don't boil the grease out of the bearings. So I don't see how an intake could have any bearing on the turbo?

Me either. I'm a chicken that's why I'm riding around with the Edge at level 1 and probably will for another 10 or 50,000 miles. ![]()

Please enlighten me. Why would you loose low end torque by putting on a CAI like the Volant. I finally found it for $383.00 and have the wife almost talked into it. Had to explain the mileage thing. Saving fuel you know at 4.99 a gal. So back to my question, more air flow less torque?

FYI the people at Banks called last week and told me they are going to release a version of the 6-Gun and OttoMind tuners for the 6.7 within the next month or so. Check out the webpage.
5.9L Cummins (24-valve), '03-07 - OttoMind®6 Diesel Tuner and PowerPDA® I know this is for a 03-07 5.9 but the same features apply to the product they are bringing out for the 6.7. Clean Tune is supposed to eliminate or reduce soot and you can control re-gens among other things. Banks Power - Six-Gun Shootout The page listed above is a link to a comparison of each of the most popular tuners/programmers offered. Some of the testing shows tuners causing dense soot during full throttle runs. I think this is the one I am going with warranty issues or not. The difference in my new truck with a 6.7 and old 2001 5.9 is about a 25% decrease in fuel economy . I need to get some of that back. |

Not to be a spoiled sport but that was a Duramax and not a Cummins. Different engines, transmissions and ECU's. Before I pulled the trigger I'd want to see the test with the Cummins.
