Thanks for the reply. Ease of installation does make sense for moving the thermocouple. I will probably install it pre-turbo anyway. I was pretty careful with the last one and managed to get a pretty clean installation and keep most of the shavings out of the manifold, and thoroughly cleaned inside the manifold when I was done. I really prefer pre-turbo because the gauge responds to engine changes much faster and gives more accurate temps at the head. My last one was pre-turbo, but my neighbor had the same truck with his thermocouple installed post-turbo, and my readings were definitely more responsive than his.
I know I will go with an Edge Juice and Attitude eventually. But I might start with the Insight and upgrade later. The mounts for the monitor are the same, and the thermocouples fit in the same location and same thread, so swapping them out is simple. I have no problem spending a little extra over the long run because I typically keep my trucks a long time. 7 1/2 years on the last one.
You say the tranny shifts better? Wow. I am already very impressed with the transmission. Of course, I have only driven the 48RFE a few times, so the only automatic I drove much in a Cummins truck was the 47RE, and that tranny was a real slushbox. So this new tranny is amazing to me - good enough to convince me to buy it over a manual transmission.
I can appreciate how nice it would be to have a turbo timer. But we can live without that for a while if we can at least see the EGTs for ourselves. My wife doesn't miss having the turbo timer because she has never had one. (I am sure if she had one she would want one again.) But she drove the last Cummins a fair amount and watching EGTs to let the turbo cool down is already a habit for her as well. Our last truck was a stick, and I am not comfortable parking a stick and not leaving it in gear, so a turbo timer was out of the question. She actually will tow just about anything except for our triple axle fifth wheel. She frequently drives a tow vehicle and tows extra trailers or boats when we do large group trips.
Thanks for the input on the thermocouple. One way or another, I will at least have gauges or a monitor on this truck very soon. Probably before I get through my first tank of fuel. (Of course a tank of fuel this time of year will last me more than a month.) I just can't imagine driving a Cummins motor without a lot more information telling me what is going on.
