I noticed that you installed your EGT thermal couple in the exhast manifold and others have installed it after the turbo. What would be the differance in the placing of the thermal couple. Also what raises the EGT? Dose it ( ECM ) lean out the fuel/air mixture? Is there a tempature sensor already on the tranny that you tap into for your tranny temp?
Thanks

EGT means exhaust gas temperature. TIT means turbine inlet temperature. The temperature of the exhaust gas is a direct indicator of how hard the engine is working and if there is a problem. As the engine load increases more fuel is injected into the cylinders causing the exhaust gas temperature to rise. Also during regeneration a small amount of fuel is dumped into the exhaust to raise the EGT.

As for where the probe is installed, If you install the sensor after the turbo you read exhaust temps. If you install the sensor before the turbo you read the turbine inlet temperature. Placing the probe at the turbine inlet results in higher temperature readings that react faster with changing engine conditions and is a more true reading. Basically, the closer you can get the sensor to the exhaust port in the head the better. The reason you will see probes downstream of the turbo is ease of installation because I had to use a right angle drill to install it and most people don't own one.

The tranny has a sensor and the Edge just reads that signal when you plug it into the OBD/CAN port

Thank You I think I will do the angle drill myself. Did you add any grease to the drill bit to keep shavings from falling down the exhaust? I seen where you said something about using a vacuum to clean out the exhaust.

There is also another school of thought around drilling in the exhaust manifold. That is, there is a possibility of chips entering the turbo from drilling. I gave this alot of thought and decided to make mine post turbo. I now know what my normal ranges are and I keep track of them. In any case, I would recommend EGT and Boost gauges as a standard mod. You'll be suprised what you'll learn from the data.

I don't know how the old Turbos were built but after looking at ours I felt that getting metal shavings sucked into the engine was more of a worry then harming the turbo so I fished a hose taped to the queens vacuum cleaner down the manifold after i got done and then when I had it all installed I started the truck and let it idle for a while and then slowly gave it throttle to 3K and then let it slowly back down to idle.
