Default Cummins 6.7L Oxygen Sensor Cleaning (Pictures)

Today I reinstalled all my cool stuff after getting no where at the dealership.

Since I had some extra time I decided to go ahead and pull my O2 sensors since one of the codes I was getting was P2000. This is after 27,000 miles. The one on the left is the sensor after the Turbo and before the NOx ABSORBER CATALYST (NAC). The one on the right is after the NAC and before the DPF.

It was definitely soot because you could blow on it and it would fly off so no scrubbing was needed. I just blew them off with some low pressure air and reinstalled them. I did drive my truck about 10,000 miles before the G30 recall and the Oxygen Module was changed so I'm going to drive it 10,000 miles and pull them again and have a look see.

Before I went to sleep it dawned on me that If these were so easy to clean with just air it makes you wonder why the Turbo can't also be cleaned with air rather then a liquid cleaner? Seems to me that introducing a liquid in the Turbo would just gum it up. Thoughts?

How hard is it to remove the turbo? might be worth doing, pushing presurized air throuh it. but I wonder how often it would require this, especially with you running the edge soot builds up faster, what do you think every 10,000 or less?

I don't see how the Edge has anything to do with this since I only run it on level 1 and at this setting I get almost 2 MPG more then stock which tells me that stock is richer then with the edge and richer is when a diesel blows black smoke/soot.

It was something that I read, that running the edge would cause your DPF to go into regen more often, thats why I thought the engine produced more soot. I'm very new to this engine, so please be patient with my lack of knowledge, I've got less than 1500 miles on my truck due to me being deployed so I don't have very much info, but I will throw stuff out if I think it will help.

It really depends on the setting and how much of a lead foot you have. Just normal driving will not produce abnormal soot. Now that depends on how you define normal and abnormal driving ...You can lug the engine in 6th gear, with or without a programmer, and produce excessive soot. I believe it is how you drive the truck and not if you have a programmer that makes the difference. IMHO

Hey bigtruck we're all new to the 6.7L so no wrries. My theory is that most of that soot was produced before the G30 recall was done which repaced the oxygen sensor module. With the edge I am actually regenerating less then stock but as I wrote this is just theory and 10,000 miles should tell me if I'm right or not. I too read those reports about the Edge but also read the Sigs of these people and they have the "Hot Unlock" which is a big no no not only because of the soot issue but also because a stock truck isn't strong enough to handle the extra HP/TQ.

Great info from the both of you, a few years from now, ya'll might as well get a job at Cummins because I'm sure you'll have more knowledge about the engine then they do!!!
I have already set aside about 1,000 for my edge, the rest will go towards a cold air, just not sure which one I will go with. I'll remember not to lug around in 6th gear, as this truck goes into 6th quick. Thanks guys

Squid, I would agree with that....my only egr problem came before the G30 recall.
I've got my superchip set at extreme but I don't race it. I'll get my foot in it about once per day for one reason or another. Anyone who drives hard with the programmer set at the highest level will no doubt produce excessive soot....can't be good for these trucks. So I guess, let the number of regens be your guide.
BTW, my best fuel economy is at extreme but only without a lead foot.
BTW2, how hard was it to get the O2 sensors out? Any advantage to cleaning them every 6 months or so...Whats ya think?

I just got my truck back from the dealer for a oxygen sensor code. My question is how do you know when the truck goes into regen is there a message that comes up? I have watched the gauges and I still can't tell when it goes into regen.
