Default Cummins 6.7L OEM Intake and Filter Pictures.

I don't know about anyone else but I'd never pulled my air filter out in over 19,000 miles so the first thing I have to say is this thing is huge!

The second thing is it sure looks like Fram orange to me.

Notice the flow ratings.

After removing it I was pleased to see that it did in fact bring in cool air from the fender well which made me wonder if maybe just an aftermarket drop in might have been an economical way to go rather then a full blown CAI but later I found out differently.

After getting the OEM filter box removed I saw this and the only thing I can figure is it is done like this to quiet the intake.

Regardless of it's purpose it is very restrictive and I'm looking forward to driving my 6.7L with the Volant tonight and hopefully it will be like the difference between night and day.

I sure did, 100+ decrease in Engine Exhaust Temp and right now the Annunciator is showing 18.5 MPG average, a 3 MPG difference over stock and 2 mpg increase over just the Edge. So I figure I should be in the 17.5 MPG range when I fill up Wednesday and if so that will be better then what I got in my Nissan Titan.

I have the 4.10 rear end gear so I would venture an educated guess that a 3/4 ton with the higher gear would probably add another 1 to 2 MPG above that depending on driving style.

Sounds like that might be my first MOd to the truck. I ran a K&N CIA on a 2000 7.3L Ford Super Duty and liked the difference it made. I just never felt the need to do it to the 5.9. I like the idea of doing something to get better fuel mileage and improve performance though.

Especially at todays prices for diesel then throw in the cost savings of not having to replace the air filter and the Mod will pay for itself in no time.

Great job. We did something similar on the Nissan Titan and I thought about doing that to my Cummins but I really wanted the Donaldson dry Filter so I went ahead and ponied up for the Volant. Now I've discovered that you can buy just the Donaldson Nano Fiber filter from Volant which makes your Mod interesting. Did you see any MPG increase?

I am wanting to do the same to mine. How did it work out? Any extra noise , better fuel mileage? How much space is left under the KN filter?

I replaced mine with and OEM filter (Balwin @ $72) There was about 1/4" of crud on the original filter at 20K miles. I am concerned with the K&N with the efficiency%.

Have you noticed more road debris in the box with the hole in the bottom?
