I purchased my '07 6.7L in May of '09 w/155,000 miles on it. The previous owner had replaced the turbo @ 100,000 miles under factory warranty and the clutch. I figured that I would get at least another 100,000 miles on the turbo due to the fact that I have a '93 Saab where I didn't have to replace the turbo until 150,000 miles. Low and behold I put 13,000 miles on it this year and have to replace the turbo because of sooting problems. Has anybody else had this problem? The dealer wouldn't help me in reducing the cost. $2500 for the turbo plus $600-$700 labor. I am going aftermarket to replace the turbo.
I would like to get some input from others as to how to avoid this problem in the future. The truck is completely stock at this time, however, I am looking at a cold-air intake system, tuner/computer, and a different exhaust system and possibly an EGR delete. Depends on what I find out about eliminating soot. Thanks for all input. RJC Design. |

I have a 2009 that I haven't had any real problems from other than a dead cell in one of the batteries but I have heard of some 2007.5 models with the 6.7 having some soot issues and driving it like you stole it seems to be the fix along with engaging the exhaust brake whenever possible. With only 1500 miles on my 2009's odometer, I decided to add a cai, 4" straight exhaust (including a dpf delete) and a smarty jr tuner. This set-up allows me to keep the egr intact but not functional (I unplugged a connector under the intake) so I can return the truck to stock in about 90 minutes so warranty work can be done. I also use a fuel additive at every fill up which may or may not help with the soot build up. I do drive the truck hard and use the e-brake all the time. I would think that a dpf delete and tuner would help keep the soot from accumulating on the turbo and allow the engine to breath. I have about a 1300 bucks in the performance mods to date. I just bought and installed a S&B cai, a complete turbo back 5" SS exhaust and a Smarty JR. Best price I found was DPF Perfomance, under $1400 with tax, free shipping. Dodge Cummins
Sorry but I thought it worthy of a plug! I have not done anything with the EGR yet! But I expect I'll leave it place just without the actuator pin so it looks stock under the hood. If you're going to remove the whole thing, I like the idea of the replacement intake pipe rather then the stock pipe with 2 visible block off plates. Like the one avail. from Shibby 6.7L Stage II Intake Sorry, I know, another plug. But most people are not even aware this stuff even exists! With the mileage on your truck, warrenty is a thing of the past, I say go for it, do the whole treatment, I think you'll see the truck will run cleaner, get better mileage and less repair bills.
