Default Your First Car

When I was 14, I bought my first car. It was a 1949 Studebaker Convertible, paid $10.00 for....Damn, I wish I still had that car.

I too had a ford. 57 Ford fairlane 2 door, 2tone black and gold, with the tube radio that you turned on and about 5 miles down the road it would come on. Vacuum Wipers that I would have to speed up to 60 and let off the gas to get them to work. What a boat when you consider this was the 70's and the other guys were driving 65 mustangs, Barracudas, Goats and Camaros but I did have a couple of things they didn't and that was a lot of room in both the front and the back........... to bad I was scared of girls then. LOL

I built the engine in mine and used LeMans and CJ parts, Figured it made about 400 HP, Headers weren't made for it so, A friend and I made a custom Dual set up with 3" pipes. Put a floor shifter in it, LTD wagon front drum brakes, MOOG Cargo coil springs all the way around, Mercury Montclair front and back seats. I got clocked going 145 MPH through town one friday afternoon by the SP, (Had a friend on the force then, he said that they weren't going to chase me because at that speed I wouldn't last long and they could just come by with a stick and a spoon to clean up the mess afterwards). Used to drag race it for some extra cash, 1/4 mile was pretty poor, but run for top end, Hold on to your britches!! Squeel the tires when you grabbed 3rd at 90+. They sure don't make like that any more. It was white when I bought it but 5 cases of black spray paint fixed that.

Mine had no anything...Used it to jump ditches on the farm...What fun I had
Second car was a 58 Chevy Belair Hardtop...283 power pack 4 BBL, bored .060 over, 3/4 cam...power glide transmission 95 MPH quarter mile. Bury the needle top end on recapped tires...Wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed back then.

38' Chevy coupe with a 283 in it. Had about 3/4 of a turn of play in the steering wheel. Vis-A'-Vis mentioned a Powerglide tranny. The drag racers are using those things nowadays. They're cast iron.

Was in the Army, just married with a baby on the way...... That translates to a white, worn out, 1960 Mercury Comet, 2 door station wagon. Had a killer 200 cu in six with 3 on the tree. Like Squid said, it had variable speed wipers, (the speed varied on the gas pedal position). AND, it had the high performance red vinyl upholstery. A/C was provided by crank windows. Eat your heart out.
