This is something I have looked into a little. I have a base and mobile CB radio. But these things have mostly truckers and guys that want to insult other radio operators. Very irritating to try and hold a conversation.

I picked up a couple old AM hand held Ham radio's off Ebay.

I've just scanned and listened to guys on there. I'm happy to say no insults being thrown back and forth. But not much going on either - It may be because my hand helds have a short range.

I did visit a local ham radio club and tried doing a little research - WOW there is a lot to learn. I think I have some other things to catch up on then maybe get back tio this mid winter when there's nothing else to do. I learned about repeaters a little and 2 channels for transmit and receive. But I think there is much more to learn !

My dad was a ham; he used K0DND or Darned Near Dead. He passed in 2001. He always tried to get us boys (I had 5 brothers) interested but only one ever did get involved. It is a fun sport but does take a lot of learning. Of course, that's half the fun. I don't think it is as interesting today since most equipment is solid state; my dad's stuff was almost all tube operated. Enjoy!
