Default Oil Change interval

I have a 2008 Dodge with 6.7L Cummins, it has 4,100 miles and so far the oil change notice has not come on.

I have read posts where the oil change notice comes on around 3,000 miles. My plan is to change the oil at 5,000 miles assuming the change oil notice does not come on before then.

Any thoughts on changing the oil at 5,000 miles or when the change notice comes on, which ever comes first? The owners guide say 7,500 miles or when the change notice comes on, this seems like a long way on an oil change.

Thanks

Paul

It really all depends on how you drive and where. Forget the oil change warning because it's just an idiot reminder and has no way of telling if your oil is clean and holding up. The best suggestion is to have an oil analysis done, it's really the only way to know how far you can go.

I change my oil and filter every 10,000 kms, along with a chassis lube. I just did a complete lubricant and filter change on the weekend at 40,000 kms. I was using Mobil 1 Delvac 5w-40 but it seems to be back ordered here. So I switched to Petro Canada's Duron 5w-40. The trans and t-case got Mopar ATF+4. The diffs got Mobil 1 Synthetic 75w-90. The engine oil and fuel filters were from Cummins and the trans filter was from Mopar. Total cost was about $200.00 CDN.

Believe it or not Walmart sells Castrol and Delvac diesel oil ($11.77 a Gallon. 3 needed) and if you're in a hurry the P/N for the Mobil1 filter is M1-403 available at PepBoys, Auto Zone, etc. I haven't seen that P/N at my Walmart yet.

If you're just getting prepped and have some time you can get the Fleetguard filters here DODGE FILTER MAINTENANCE KIT - 4/2 ('07-'09, 6.7L) FLTGD-Dodge Cummins and Ford Power Stroke Diesel Truck Accessories - Geno's Garage $91 and you get 4 oil filters and 2 fuel filters which isn't a bad deal, oh yeah they'll also throw in a Cummins windshield decal.
