Default Newbie Intro

Hi all,
Never thought I would own a Dodge or a diesel. Well, that all changed last December and I couldn't be happier. The primary use of the truck will be to tow a fiver.
I prefer to do as much maintenance as possible on the truck myself. In previous life's I have been an A/C mechanic, flight engineer, and owned and operated a service station, albeit that was many moons ago. I must tell you I know nothing about diesels, but I am somewhat handy with tools.
Bottom line I am here to learn about maintaining the 6.7L, and what to expect for problems from other owners/users. I plan to leave the truck stock in order to maintain the warranty, but would like to add some gauges such as tranny temp, boost and exhaust temps.
Cheers, Dean Bunkers, Ocean Shores WA

Well Bud you've come to the right place, welcome . There are some other forums that deal with gutting the emissions, racing and pulling but we're a more mature lot and are trying to live with the emissions and most of us do maintain our own trucks. We have a lot of info here but if you can't find what you're looking for just give a yell out! Check out the edge insight for an easy gauge solution.

Default Edge Insight Questions

Squid you mentioned in your reply that I should check out the Edge Insight for a possible gauge solution. I have checked into insight a little, and it is suppose to monitor tranny temps. My first question is does it require a connection to the tranny pan or outlet line? Second question, if you install the EGT probe does it void the warranty?
And a third off the wall question, I like to rotate five tires rather than four, where would I go to find a fifth rim that matches the four I have on the ground?

I have the Insight and it works great. It does monitor tranny temp and may other things without a separate connection, just the one under the dash. I installed the EGT probe without any problems and talk with my dealer and they had no problems with it. It does take a little time and patiences to install the probe but not a big deal. Don't know about the rim, maybe try the dealer.

Default Thank You

Thank you JamesPI for the response. Do you know where the sensor is located for the tranny temp that the insight uses? Using what Dodge has already put into the truck's computer system makes more sense than installing another sensor.
Were you able to install your probe without using a right angle drill? I don't have one, but I am sure my neighbor does.
It sounds like the Edge Insight is the way to go rather than buying separate sensors and gauges.
Cheers, Dean

I don't know where the sensor is, it just picks the temp threw the wiring harness. I did use an angle drill. You want to make sure you get a magnetizer/demagnetizer for you drill bit. You will magnetize it, drill a bit, then demagnetize it to wipe off the shavings then repeat. You do not want any shavings getting into the turbo. Squid did a great write up on how to do it.

Default Edge Insight Software

Hi Jamespi,
I was just about to order an Insight and found out its computer software will not work on MAC computers. We have no other computers. Can you tell me how important or how often you use the Insight software? Thanks in advance.

Not that often, 2 times in 2 years. You can do all the screen setups and alarms on the unit. The computer just gives you a bigger screen to do the setups. The only real advantage with the computer is being able to do software updates.

Default Good news!

Hi Jamiepi, Thanks for the response. The good news is my wife reminded me that we had a Dell Laptop in the back of the closet from four years ago. I plugged it in and it still works fine, so I have a PC that I can use with the Edge Insight for updates until they update the Edge software to be compatible with the Mac. Can't wait for the insight to arrive so I can install it. I appreciate all the help.
Cheers, Dean
