Default New Members to the Diesel World

Hello, we are Jack & Lynne Retired in Maumelle, ARkansas (outside of Little Rock). Last week we purchased our first Diesel a "2008 Dodge RAM 3500 Laramie, 4x4, 6-sp Auto, CC, DRWs, LBed, 6.7L Cummins" with 130,000 miles. We added it to our stable of other trucks, 1987 Chevy C30, CC, DRWs, LBed, Auto, 454 Gasser with 112,500 miles. We've had it for 25 years and it becomes an antique next year. Plus we also have our Truck & Slide-In Camper setup, a 1993 Ford F250 XLT, Extend-a-Cab, LBed, Auto with a 460 Gasser with 26,600 orginal miles and a 1993 Lance LC980 Camper. We plan to set-up the RAM to haul the Lance and might sell the Ford. But the Ford and Lance were bought as a matched pair back in 1993. So, it's going to be hard to break them up. Anyways, we are newbies to the Diesel World and will learn a bunch from you'al. I've already changed the Cummins oil and used to small of a container and we now have a beautiful Black area in our driveway. Lesson Learned, "Oil comes out like it's Niagara Falls". Jack & Lynne

Welcome to the forum. Many of us have had the same misfortune. Some use cat litter to soak up the spilled oil, then they put a degreaser type of detergent on the oil spill to help clean it up. I usually use my wife's laundry detergent. I add a little bit of water, then use a push broom or a stiff hand broom to ensure it covers the area. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then wash off with water. If this doesn't do it, use some citrus degreaser or BBQ degreaser and follow the same process.
I have learned (the hard way) to use plenty of newspaper when I am changing oil. I also use nitrile gloves (these are usually blue colored) to protect my hands. My oil drain container holds 3 gallons so I usually have plenty of room. Since my wife uses liquid laundry detergent, I have a ready source for holding the used oil. I usually have two or three of these containers stored in my shop for use in changing the oil on the equipment I have at home.
Good luck on your new vehicle; check on the internet as well as locally for prices for items like filters etc. You might consider spending a little money and buying the "permanent" type of air filter (K&N, Airaide, etc.) Over time, these pay for themselves. Just make sure the filter meets the Cummins specifications, which I believe is 5 microns.
Welcome to the forum.

Thanks "HH", we'll take your advice. The next time I do the Oil Change I hope that is all I have to do (no spillage clean-up).

It sounds like we all got Christened, "Anointed with Oil", during our first Oil Change.
