Question New member, 6.7 cummins owner since 07

Hi. I am Phil and I am a new member here but I have been reading post for several years now. I began shortly after buying a new 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 with the 6.7 cummins. It is my first Deisel truck ever and I love it! It had 3 miles on it when I drove it off dealer lot. Shortly after I purchased mine my boss bought 3. Then we began having issues with the check engine light. At that time the dealer didn't have an anwser from Dodge they said but they were aware of a problem. They flashed the ECMs and made the check engine lights go off but then they came back on shortly. One of my bosses trucks began to loose power each time his came on. I never experienced that with mine. Finally about a year ago the dealer did the last flash on mine and the light hasn'r come on since nor has the driver display warning came back on telling me that my partical filter was was in need of regin. Should I trust that they fixed the problem yet? Or have they just found a way to keep the light off? I have 87,000 mile on my 07 and one of the 08's my boss bought for the company has over 90,000. The 08 is a 4 wheel drive truck and he has been having front end problems. The steering link even fell off his once while driving. (lucky it was slow) I really love my truck. I have the 6 speed manual for pulling. I hope my truck last a very long time. Once I hit 100,000 is there any alterations you all suggest I do so that my engine will last? I have an Amsoil by pass oil system and I change my fuel filter every oil change when the display says to even though that is shorting the recomended change that Amsoil says. I use aditive to the fuel each time I fill my tank. I have all the fluids filled with Amsoil synthetic lubes. I have a friend who works on Deisels for a living and he says once I reach 100,000 I should let them remove the partical filter and block the EGR and do what ever is required to fool the ECM. Is this good? Sorry my post is long but I am glad I have such a resourse as this to go to. Thank you for your replys. Phil

Hi Phil, I have 115,000 on my 07.5 and all I do is drive the crap out of it, HAHAHA.

As for removing all the antipollution stuff that's between you and your local laws.

Here where I live they don't check but I'm leaving it for no other reason then it makes me feel like I'm helping the environment and future generations of living things and I really don't like the black smoke that others seem to be mesmerized by.

As for the regenerations, get something like the Edge insight and you'll be able to see when the truck is regenerating along with other things like boost, etc. http://www.edgeproducts.com/product.php?pk=81&pvk=247

Comprehensive Gauge Display:
The Insight is an easy-to-install standalone multi-gauge display. With what would otherwise cost thousands of dollars and take hours to install, the Insight provides inexpensively and instantly. Some of its many features and benefits include:
• One simple connection to the vehicle’s OBDII (diagnostic) port
• Displays more than 100 different vehicle parameters
• View parameters in either bar or graph form
• Built-in safety features: user-defined visual and audible alerts

Scan Tool and Data-Logging Capabilities:
Capture and record even more information about the vehicle’s performance with the Insight’s data-logging and scan tool features.
• Display and clear diagnostic trouble codes with full text description
• Capture and record up to five parameters for 90 seconds
• Display peak values such as speed and RPM on a PC (software included)
• Performance testing: 0-60 and quarter-mile times

Bonus Features:
In addition to all of the parameters that can be displayed, diesel owners can purchase a thermocouple probe (sold separately) that connects to an additional sensor port on the OBDII connection and display EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature). And for owners of new diesels with diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps, the Insight displays DPF regeneration status.

With its gauges, built-in safety features, and scan-tool and data-logging capabilities, the Insight is a valuable, comprehensive tool. Also, all the latest files and product information can be downloaded via the Internet, which means you never have to send your unit in to get re-flashed. But perhaps best of all is the Insight’s ease of use. With touch-of-a-button control, it’s never been easier to gain insight into your vehicle’s vital engine information.
