Unhappy Looking at 07 2500 SLT Big Horn-Lemon?

Hi,
I am looking at buying a newer truck. I went to a local dealer who said they had two 07 2500 6 speed 6.7 Big Horns. What really freaked me out was I read on the sticker that these trucks were purchased back due to lemon law and the title would be branded.
This was on both trucks.
I read on this site where there were recalls due to the loose or sagging silencer pad that could contact the EGR Cooler and cause a fire.
Would this be the issue why they tagged these two as lemons?

No, I bet the owners were having problems with the trucks DPF (Diesel Particulant Filter) sooting up because they poked around town and the trucks never went into Regeneration and clogged up. They have to either be used to tow or ran out on the highway to keep the DPF clean. If your use of the truck matches either one of these requirements go ask them why they were bought back. If that's the reason, act silly, get a heck of a deal and enjoy the ride.

Welcome to the forum. I have a 2007.5 6.7L and do quite a bit of in town driving with short trips, usually less than 5 miles. I've learned over time to get it out on the highway for 30-40 minutes to clean the DPF out. The benefits of this truck and motor have out weighed the problems I've had, especialy when you start understanding how it needs to be taken care of. I would not hesitate to buy this truck used if the reason for return was for the DPF issues. Make sure you get a clear answer from the dealer as to why they are "lemon" returns, and as Squid said, get a good deal and enjoy the truck.

I have an 2008 6.7L 3500 similar to Squid and do the same as Brasso. No problems, very happy. For me, I may alot of 10 miles trips during the weekdays and on the weekend, can 600+ miles easily ....

This part is very important

Alot of the buy back seen in our area (California) are due to strictly DPF issues.

Cheers,
Roberto

How you drive this truck is very important...Find out why the truck was bought back...I'll bet you can get yourself one heck of a deal

Haven't really had any problems with mine, even when the wife drives it. My daily commute is about 15 miles and all freeway. Twice a week I run it in 5th all the way to work. The mileage is usually around 15 to 17, I start it put it on high idle, turn the EBrake on, wait a minute or so and drive it. Extended idle time is what also does them in.

My '07 has 43,000 kms on the clock. I have had no problems. As others have said, you need to drive these trucks, not idle them. If you do idle for more than a few seconds (not in traffic) set the high idle. I do not let mine shift above 4th gear in city driving and I always run it with the engine brake on. My mileage is right around the 20 mpg mark on the highway in 2wd at 110 kph. It has gotten as high as 25 going slower. It is the best tow rig that I have ever owned.
So, if I were making a deal on one of these buy back Lemon Law trucks, the price would have to be significantly lower, because the "branding" will make it worth less down the road. I would also make sure that the latest computer flash has been done along with the recall. As has been noted above, the buy back occurred because of the emissions equipment. An owner must learn how to work with this stuff, regardless of the make. They all have it. BUT, none of the others have a Cummins!

I bought an early 08 with 9500 miles on it. When I first got it a code came up. Took to dealer and they did their thing. Have put 7000 mi on since purchased and no problems. I ususlly drive short to work, but do get on the highway once in a while. Never drive below 1500 in town, and once in a while I put in 2nd gear, with ebrake on, and get on it till 3000 and back off so that the ebrake can do its thing with shaking up the soot. It runs great.

It seems as if I get 18-20 on the hwy and about 10.5-11 towing. The truck has a 4.10 rear dif.
