Mr. G,
Thank you for the advice. I have so much to learn about this truck but am liking every minute of it. This site has been a great help in taking some of the steepness out of the learning curve. I like the idea of using a K&N filter as I have them in my other vehicles and have had zero problems. I wanted to do a bit of research before I put one in the new beast and will be watching your posts. You confirmed what I was thinking about Amsoil. I think I will stick to the norm (standard synthetic with frequent changes). As for mileage, I also have no real complaints. I was getting 17 to 19 mpg on my last last trip to the Sierras which I thought was okay. It certainly does like some diesel fuel better than others though. Thanks again, RPG |

It can get thursty, that is for sure. I have several 'Friends' that have Power Smokes and they both pull trailers a little lighter than mine, I got 12 to 14 towing to Durango and they got less than 9. I feel better about my rig after that, not that I was remotely unhappy with it, I am not at all. I feel I still got the best rig on the market for what I do with it. Beside both of the Strokes have had HP fuel and oil pumps, fuel injectors and transmission issues within a year after purchase. I have been using teh Valvoline service centers for several years to do my oil changes and the Rotella was $89 with my filter and the Premium Blue was $99, No brainer in my eyes, the last oil sample came back with a recommendation of a 6,000 mile oil change,I have been at 5,000 for the last 3(sure beats the heck out of 2,200 from the comand center). As far as the new engine, I believe the air filtering efficiency needs to be very high, 99.8% or something on that order, I am not sure that a K&N can do that, but I will watch it pretty close and let you all know what I find. the budget is tight and $200 to $400 for a CAI with no real increase was a little pricey. The K&N in the 96 proved to be worth 35 HP (Chassis Dyno proven) and 1+ MPG, But Gassers like that sort of thing, the plug wires were worth 15 HP too. 17 to 19 on the open road isn't too bad, the wifes 3.0l V-6 ranger only get 16.

maybe my dealer needs to activate it? |

Most likely, you will need your dealer to 'turn it on'.

It builds turbo boost when the exhuast brake is in operation. Their is a slider valve in the turbo that only funtions when boost is built. If not used the valve will carbon up & not funtion as it should and cause a check engine light to come on. Anouther way is to drive it like U stole it.

The fast idle/pto thing must be only for automatic equiped trucks, I took my truck to the dealer as soon as I knew about it to have it enabled and the dealer mechanic said he "turned that function" on, but was un able to get it to work. I tried the steps repeatedly at home and it did not do anything with my truck, it to is a 6spd manual trans.

Park brake set, door closed, trans in neutral, cruise on, foot off the brake (that turns it off), hit "set" and the engine should idle up to 1100. Hit "accel" and it will climb 100 rpm at a time, I think it will top out at 1500. Autos don't need the park brake set to operate.

well I've tried it again and still does nothing with my truck, park brake set, trans in neutral,no foot on the brake, turned cruise on hit set,no change, hit accel no change, tried every thing seat belt on off, you name it....no change. I had the feature turned *on* as soon as I knew about it ,and I believe it was enabled when I had the dealer do it as the mechanic knew exactly what I was talking about when I went to get it turned "on" and he tried to get it to work for quiet a while and was not able to make it work. so their is either something wrong with my truck or that function is not on it . and it is a manual trans. truck. built 05/08.
