Default Hello fellow Cummins owners !

Hello all,

I recently purchased my 1st Cummins powered Dodge truck. I was a mechanic for most of my career and have worked in Auto and Truck garages doing anything from oil changes to major restorations.

Anyway, this is my second diesel powered pick up I've owned for personal use. I worked as a automobile mechanic when they started adding things like EGR Valves, Cat converters, ECM's. In the earlier yrs during the 1980's these vehicles ran like crap and needed a lot of attention to stay on the road.

I only mention that because of all the electronics and emission controls I'm seeing on the new diesel powered trucks. I'm having a few bugs in my Dodge and doing research led me to this forum and to some answers to my questions.

My truck is stock except that someone removed the muffler, spliced in a pipe to replace it.

2 weeks ago I had a Service reminder on the overhead display that I understand is automated at 67k - replace crankcase filter. I went to my local Cummins dealer, bought the new filter and put it in - spoke to a guy at the local Dodge dealer to get the magic password on clearing the reminder - no problem there.

Well now I have a new problem MIL light came on - plugged in my OBD reader and found "P2262" turbo charger boost not present.

I read the posts online and on this forum - ended up unplugging my EGR turning on my exhaust brake and drove on the freeway 70 mph in 4th gear for a while. Cleared my faults and plugged everything back in.

So far so good- I now drive with the exhaust brake turned on. But now I'm wondering if I should do some mods to insure I don't have problems in the future and maybe increase my MPG. I took off the EGR and found plenty of soot sitting in there- Gosh I hate to see that crap going in my intake manifold!

I need this truck as my daily driver - most days I drive 50 - 60 miles mostly city 45 - 60 mph. I pull a trailer from time to time, but it's more a daily driver than a work horse.

I originally figured I'd leave my truck stock. I'm 50 yrs old and went through hot rodding with all my cars and trucks and pretty much realized once you head down that road, it is a commitment and will need ongoing updates - further mods - things beefed up to handle the extra power etc.

But I do have concern of possible shorter engine life possibly due to this emissions crap pumping soot back into my engine and eventually my exhaust filter will plug up. I'd hoped to see this truck live to 200k or more.

I'd love to hear from other members and read their experiences etc.

My truck is an '07 that I bought new in January of '08. It now has 107,000+ KMs on the clock. It has been to the dealership 3x since new, (2 recalls and one reflash). Other than general service, a set of front brake pads and tires, the truck has needed nothing. It is my DD and travel trailer puller. About 50% of the KMs have been racked up with our 8,000 lb trailer on the ball and another 1,00 LBs in the box. My only mod is a gutted intake tube and a 4" hole cut in the bottom of the stock air box. I quit using after market drop in air filters when a friend dusted his intake system and engine. I am now using the stock Cummins air filters. IMHO, these are great trucks.
