Great site, everything looks very informative with no BS to lead someone astray. After years of dreaming, I finally stumbled onto my dream truck: a good used Cummins 4wd 6spd mega cab... with under 30K miles - other than that I wasn't too picky. I turned it into the perfect truck by chopping the frame (had the long bed conversion done) the day after I bought it.
Although I am a life-long gear head this is my first diesel, so I am looking forward to learning maintenance tips and mild engine upgrades through you guys. I am interested in improving fuel mileage through CAI, exhaust and tuner upgrades so please throw me a bone!

You might want to read a couple of threads here, let me help with a couple of suggestions:

I Jumped, Both Feet!

DPF Delete

I posted about the mods I was doing, the results, and nada, no one responded. Then I found the second thread I linked here. Now I understand, even though I am NOT one of those Redneck Smoke Junkies, most here do not believe the DPF should be deleted. It's the route that I took in search of better mileage. All up, with the fuel economy tune from Smarty, I am getting 25% better mileage with little or no smoke.

Hey TW I don't think anyone here has a problem with you deleting stuff but some of us can't so we don't have anything to add and stick with dealing with the Antipollution stuff.

Welcome Bull! I for one will never be able to go back to a gasoline engine in my truck no matter what the expense.

TW, thanks for the info, this is exactly the type of stuff I am looking for. I hate reading company brochures and magazine write-ups wondering how much is truly useable knowledge and how much is just smoke and mirrors looking for my wallet.
Squid, at this point (still under warranty) I am leaning toward the less radical fuel mileage mods that have been touched on here. My biggest concern is putting something on the truck that causes a CEL while my other half is driving it...yes, I fear the wrath of a she-devil.

Glad to see a response, I was wondering if I had stepped into a pile...
Well, when I took the truck in for an emission test, to get the title changed to my name, I asked what is involved specific to a diesel? It's a visual check, they look at the tail pipe, "Don't see smoke, passed!" So I decided to see how far I could improve the mileage.
I'm thinking next year, I'll look into getting a set of those "Free Spin" front hubs from DynaTrac. Makes sense to me that if you can stop the front end from rotating, you gain by losing, that is more MPG from reduced friction.

I don't run those kind of forums.

I have 92,000 miles on my truck and it gets the same MPG as our 04 Nissan Titan so I'm happy.

I get the better MPG than my buddies Toyota. About the same MPG if i'm towing my 12,000 trailer and he's not towing anything.

One of these long winter days I'm going to sit down and add the price of deleting the DPF and then calculate how many miles it'll take to pay it all off with the increased MPG? Should be interesting.

I did the math since I know how much of a difference there is before and after.
Using $3.24 per gallon, which is what I paid in Ohio last week, I came up with 32,000 miles until you break even. Squid, with the miles you're racking up, you'd have broke even the first year and saved at least $3,000 since.
I keep my little half-ton for 21 years, so far, my kid wants to put a Cummins in it and keep going!
Since I intend to keep this truck longer. If I keep it say, 300,000 miles, I could see a return of....lots
