If have J35 flash update and thinking disconnecting the EGR, bad move. When J35 flash is installed, there are traps in place that prevent regen from working. The mileage gains achieved pre J35 and disconnecting the EGR and post J35 with EGR connected are about the same. With J35 update, regen will not work correctly, the DPF will continue to load up till full.

I use my truck now as a daily driver to work (max of 6 miles each way) and some play on the weekends. Some weekends we put 500+ miles, no issues at all with the EGR and DPF. BTW, to date, I have not had any CEL issues and only been to the dealer for several recalls and two flash updates.

Engine post process injection (what cummins does) should run a bypass oil filter. Worth every cent spend and helps deal with the soot contamination of the oil.

Here are couple links on the subject (warning, you get what you pay for):

BYPASS filters and data points ..

FS-2500 Bypass Install

Hope that helps.

The dpf works off of a pressure sensor mounted on the side of the transmission and independent of the egr system and unplugging the egr shouldn't have an adverse effect on the dpf.

Not completely true. It works with a combination of sensors. That applies to J35 flash of note. The differential sensor is only one of the triggers, other actions has to come into play before a regen cycle will come online. EGR is needed to clean the two cats (which is something that goes completely ignored in all discussions). EGR is not needed for dpf regen.

The J35 flash update alter and add traps on data from the sensors to the ECU and alters the post injection process. Some of it coding was intentionally done to stop us from unplugging the egr. All vehicles in the USA has a recall notice for J35. If you do not have it currently, you will get it like or not the next time you head to a dealer.

If you have the J35 update and you unplug the egr, the truck will never go into dpf regen ..... You may think it does since the update seems to have changed the ODBII OID's. So if you are monitoring the OID for regen, its no longer for the DPF, its for the cats and only last a couple minutes. Now the J35 gets you about 1.5 MPG increase with the EGR plugged in. Someone at Dodge/Cummins watched and listened and fixed some of the code.

It is really important to understand these trucks very well based by year and ECU versions. What may apply to one year with no updates does not necessarily apply to the same year with all the updates.

Cheers.

Oh good lord .... Deletes also have limitations based on ECU/flash versions. Not all deletes are solves all solution.

When did become a forum on pushing deletes ?

I guess I'm lucky. I bought my truck w/ no warranty from the stealership. I will have to go to my mechanic and I'm sure he wouldn't do something I wouldn't want him to do. I'm still trying to learn as much as I can about this EGR unplugging before I attempt it myself.

Deletes are a personal preference and not for everyone. However, when one has driven their truck as he should have (I still dont understand that concept) eb on 99% of the time, towed regularly, serviced on time and not idled alot there is something wrong. I know every truck is different, but after a trip or two to the dealer for the same thing, I would have to make a change, again just me. Love the cummins, just without all the crap on it.
