morbius,
I have noticed in cold/cool weather that the overhead console shows gas milage going down until the truck comes up to operating temperature. I put a Fia Grille Cover on my truck and I took off the mechanical fan. Watch your temperature gauge and it will run where it normally does as long as you are not pulling loads in warm weather in the winter. Pulling loads up passes could be a problem for you so you may just start with the grille cover and see how that works. I noticed you installed the free spin front end, any tips or regrets so far? |

Thanks for the info, thinking back on my truck driver days I remember closing up the front grill on cold weather days and opening it up on hot days.
I have no regrets and very happy on the free spin front end, especially on a dually. Would do it again in a snap. Suggestion I have for others is if you have a dually, do not get a kit that requires a dually adapter, that just adds unwanted flex back in that you are trying to remove. If you are doing lots of 4x4 and/or ranch work, may want to think about a kit with sealed abs ring. In my case, I am always pulling branches and other stuff wrapped around front axle u-joints and rotors. Heard of folks getting stuff stuck between the sensor and ring causing damage and requiring a new hub (not cheap, up to $400 cost). All quality kits are good, not cheap, but a good investment/protection for the truck of you plan to keep it for a while. I went with spyntec for my setup, cumminz used a different kit but a solid 1 piece hub also. Cheers.

morbius,
I sent you a private message after I sent the one you answered, I pulled a stupid and did not look at page 2 and thought it did not send. Thanks for the info as my brother lives outside Milford Ca and does use his dually for ranch work. This should help him. |

We also have to remember that the DPF uses diesel to clean the filter so the more you idle and drive around town the more active regenerations the truck will be forced to do causing your MPG to suffer significantly.

Whats up! I have a 2012 ram dualie 4x4. 985 miles on it. I was getting 13.5 mpg between town and highway. I unplugged egr valve now im getting 18.2 that was on a steady drive 60 mph. unbelievable. Love the truck. Emissions suck. Also i removed the exhaust silencer and muffler from the exhaust. All dpf stuff is still in place. You might try that just for grins.

I'll throw my .02 in here for what it's worth.
I agree with the winter front suggestion, we run them here all winter. When the ambient temp is around freezing +, one must open the flaps to let some air through to the rad. A winter front will help economy in the winter but care must be taken in spring or fall not to over heat. Remove it in summer. I bought my truck new, 4 years ago. It has been used about 50/50 as a daily driver and travel trailer tower. It is coming close to 150,000 KMs. When new it was doing about 14 to 15 Imperial MPG. Other than the following, it is stock with all emissions intact. At about 2,000 KMs, the EGR was unplugged and for the most part it has remained so ever since. This netted 1.5 to 2 MPG. At 10,000 KMs i changed to synthetic oil in all components, gutted the air intake tube, cut a 4" hole in the bottom of the stock air box and added an after market drop in air filter. Mileage went up another 2 MPG. From that point to 60,000 KMs I tried 3 different drop in filters, a flat aFe, a cone type aFe and a cone type K&N. There was no mileage advantage to any of them. Because a couple of friends here were having dust problems and I had noticed that the fit of the after market filters was not great at the seal corners, i switched back to A stock Cummins filter with no mileage change. I did notice that at 50,000 or so KMs there was about a 1 MPG increase in economy and another came at about 100,000 KMs. That put the truck at 20 to 21 MPG on the highway locked on cruise at 120 KMs. Towing 8,000 lbs with 1,000 lbs in the box, it gets about 14. Presently it has an S&B installed. I did not expect nor did it produce any economy increase but I have the scoop sitting in the garage ready to install, so we will see what that does. Sorry this is so long!
