Default troubles

Thursday afternoon I had the 20ft trailer hooked up to the Ram and was headed north with the wife for a fun filled weekend of atving with friends, well about an hour from the house going up a 12% grade the truck just bogged down and the water temp. gauge was up around 230 and there was a strange smell coming from the truck. When I got to the pull off at the top I pulled in and popped the hood and checked all of the obivious things and there didn't seem to be anything wrong. Jumped back in the truck and decided to continue on and see how things would go, as the water temp had already returned to where it normally would be. When I took the truck out of park the check engine light came on(not flashing - I was told by the dealer as long as it isn't flashing it isn't "critical" but to have it checked out as soon as possible), so I pulled the codes using the key/switch trick, wrote the codes down and got on the internet with my cell phone and headed straight to this site. Unfortunately at the time I couldn't find either of these codes (p0489 and p0200c) listed on the list I found via the phone, as viewing the site on a cell phone leaves a lot to be desired. So I continued on, about 2 hours up the road I got a warning on the overhead console stating DPF 80% full(I was doing enough continous highway driving this should not have happened), I tried to keep speed up without stopping so it could do the regen but within 30 minutes the indicator had changed to DPF full, power reduced. The next morning using my GPS I located several dealers within 50 miles of the camp I was staying at, well the closest one must have fallen victim to dodges cutbacks as their phone# had been disconnected. The next one I called said they wouldn't have anyone in until 7/6 because of the holiday weekend. Didn't have much choice other then to drive the truck home as I wasn't leaving my truck and trailer 300 miles from home. The truck made it home OK and I was surprised at how little performance difference there was, the only time it was noticeable was the long steep grades. Took it into the local dealer and dropped off, hopefully they'll get to it tommorrow and hopefully the drive home didn't do too much damage. I'll keep you updated. I'm thinking it was in the middle of a regen going up the grade and me putting it in park screwed something up, what do you guys think? What would have any of you done in this situation?

Sounds strange...I believe that regen stops when acceleration starts...So having said that, was it possible that you had started a regen process got to the 12% grade and proceeded to fill up the DPF? How many miles do you have on the truck?? Also, see Squid's post on the Crankcase Ventilation Filter...
P0489 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Ctrl Circ Low
This really sounds like Squid's problem. Let us know.

P0489 is a new one P0489-egr control circuit low

The P0200c isn't a valid code on our truck and as Vis said the regeneration warning on the overhead sounds like what my truck was doing when the CCV filter was oil soaked and I believe I sucked oil into the turbo which ended up gunking up the 02 sensors which caused the truck to go into constant regeneration while also telling me my DPF was full when it wasn't.

As for what I'd do? I would have done the same thing as you and driven home. Why don't you all stick my cell phone number in your billfold or in your phone and if you're out on the highway/in the driveway and need some info you can give me a call. 316-207-1994

Thank You I will put in my ownerz manual so that it is always with the truck, along with the list of codes that you provided for us.

Got home this afternoon and there was a message from the dealer saying they cleaned the dpf and took it out and did a regen and it's ready for me to pick up. I want to talk to them more to find out what they think caused this. Also see if they cleaned CCV and O2 sensors.

Squid thanks for putting that offer out there, your number is in my cell phone now. I think I'll print out the code list and put it in the truck, that sounds like a good idea!

PA, give us some more information...How many miles do you have on the truck, is it stock and/or what mods do you have. This will help us compare problems in the future.

Truck is stock with 34,000 miles on it. I asked the dealer if they did anything to address what intially caused the check engine light to come on and they said no. They just desooted the DPF and took it out and did a regen, so I have a feeling the problem will be back.

Sounds like by the time you got to the dealership the code had cleared and unless you do a lot of in town driving I don't believe your DPF was full. Not at 34,000 miles and this being the first time.

I believe that this can happen. Starting up a 12% grade with regen in progress. Regen stops, because of hard load on the engine. Pulling a 12% grade is gonna produce smoke, I can see the DPF filling up.
I also believe that the regen process works better without the engine brake engaged. Every time the engine defuels, the regen is interrupted. Having said that, seeing the benefits of the engine brake, I leave mine on.

I noticed black smoke coming out of the exhaust today when pulling away from lights and stop signs, I didn't think my clean diesel was supposed to do this???? I haven't worked it hard though since they did the work on it, it will get hooked up to the trailer again tommorrow, I'll see what she does.
