Default Throwing Codes

After driving my used '07 truck (new to me) for the last two weeks, It threw two codes. How I found out what they are is I went to a lube place and they did it for free. The codes are P000F and P245A. What are they and what does it mean? The light went off after they checked the codes but it came on again after pulling my T.T. to my house for some repair work that is needed.

Your code are:

P000f-fuel System Over Pressure Relief Valve Activated
P245a-egr Cooler Bypass Control Circuit Open

I would venture to guess given the mileage that the egr valve is sooted and the valve is sticking. Easy to remove and clean. As for the relief valve, I think it is related to the egr, not sure about that and others would have to jump in to correct me.

To see the codes yourself:

Forum search get you this: How to get your Mil Code from your Dodge Ram

Just turn the key from off to on 3 times and leave it in the on position the third time. The odometer will display any and all codes and when it's displayed them all it will show ------- and then it will say done.

Cheers.

Not noob question at all ! Good question.

If memory serves correctly, no posting here about doing that. It is what I think a rather simple job if you have mechanical skills and tools.

Let me look around and see what I can find in terms of pics and come up with a quick howto. If some else may jump in and have them done already.

Cheers.

Even though Squid (08-17-2009, 08:33 PM) had some pics they don't mean anything w/ out text w/ the numbers. To me that is.

I found this somewhere.
6.7L EGR VALVE CLEANING PROCEDURE
1. Remove EGR valve assembly from engine. Refer to 6.7L EGR Valve removal.
2. Remove four mounting screws (4) from EGR valve motor (3).
3. Remove valve motor (6) and shim (5) from EGR valve housing (1). Motor (6) and shim (5) must be kept for reassembly. The original EGR valve motor and its shim must be reinstalled onto the original EGR valve housing.
4. Use two fingers to press down on valve spring retainer (3) to unlock two valve keepers (2). If valve keepers will not release using finger pressure, locate a 5/8” deep socket to the spring retainer (3). Gently tap on the socket with a small hammer to release keepers, then use two fingers and press for keeper removal.
5. Remove valve spring retainer (3) and valve spring (2).
6. Lightly press on valve stem (1) about 3/8” to force valve faces from valve seats.
7. Using a small nylon scrubbing brush, lightly brush away loose soot from EGR valve housing.
8. The EGR valve shaft stem (3) is comprised of two valve faces (1) on two valve seats. Using the same small nylon scrubbing brush, lightly brush away loose soot from stem (3), valve seat (2) and also from valve seat on EGR valve housing.
9. Completely submerge valve housing using a mixture of hot tap water and MOPAR® EGR System Cleaner (ESC). Mix cleaning solution 1 part ESC and 4 parts water. Allow cleaning solution to soak for 1 hour.
10. Remove assembly from cleaning solution. Completely remove remaining soot from valve stems, both valve seats, and both valve faces using a small nylon scrubbing brush. Dispose of cleaning solution per local governmental regulations.
11. Rinse EGR valve housing in hot tap water until all cleaning solution is rinsed clean. Dry completely.
12. Assemble valve spring (2) and retainer (3) to housing.
13. Position valve keepers (2). Press down on retainer (3) until groves on valve keepers lock into valve stem (1).
14. Install original shim (5) and original motor (6) to housing. Motor is not indexed. Rotate motor until its electrical connector is pointed towards front of vehicle. Install four mounting screws (7).
15. Install EGR valve assembly to engine. Refer to 6.7L EGR Valve installation.

Which is better for the engine and my wallet. To clean the EGR or go and buy a Smarty or the like, and buy the EGR kit and do the EGR delete?

EGR delete requires more than just egr part, usually requires DPF delete and special tuner to make the codes go away. Kits can range up to 1500.00 depending on quality. I know of folks on other forums with over 300K miles on a stock 6.7L used in hotshot hauling and the no problems with the the smog system.

Honestly, gaskets to clean the egr are check, solvent is cheap and the time is about 1 hour (I think).

These truck have to be driven not pampered. Doing so keeps everything working as it should and get best mileage between servicing. At 40K miles, I pulled my sensors and checked a couple parts. All I had was a light soot dusting, nothing a couple shots of brake clean did not solve and went right back together.

Do not know if I answered your question well enough, hopefully other will jump in and provide more feedback.

Cheers.

Every time I plan to clean my EGR it rains. Was going to do it tomorrow and guess what? Yup, it's suppose to rain. I've decided that I'm going to have to have a pole barn built with a door opening tall enough for my truck since I'm now a Cummins Diesel convert for life.
