Default Check Engine Light

Went to the Local Dodge dealer yesterday to ask the service manager some questions about my truck 2011 6.7 and make an appointment to get some items fixed before 36000 mile bumper to bumper warrantee ran out.
My check engine light comes on almost every month no matter how I drive it. I drive 7 miles to work some stop and go but speeds up to 60mph and will normally take 30 mile road trip pulling my boat or to the hunting camp trip each weekend.
He told me that some trucks have that problem and the owners bring them in every month and half to get them looked at. He said as I have read on the forum to drive with the exhaust brake on. He also said not to use cruise on long trips and not to idle the truck for long periods of time.
Isn't this a manufacture's problem if the engines won't run without the check engine light coming on? If it comes on after the bumper to bumper 36,000 mile goes out will it be covered by 100,000 mile warrantee?

If people buy a big old Cummins powered truck and use it to drive to Walmart, sit in traffic jams and only Haul air it's hard for me to see how it would be a manufacturers problem since there are gasoline engine options that are more designed for light duty while a Cummins is designed for heavy duty............now get out there and work the crap out of her!

I disagree with you Squid. It is a manufacturers problem, because a lot of us buy a heavy duty truck that has a reputation for being dependable, to do some "occasional" heavy hauling and then we find out that our purchase is more undependable than anything I have ever owned. But a lot of us have to use that vehicle for our other transportation also. It is the manufacturer and dealer's problem because, in my case, they did not inform the buyer of the special driving requirements, they just wanted to make a sell. Yes, I realize that I, personally, would be better off with a gasoline vehicle and I plan to do that when it is affordable. Until that time, the manufacturer needs to work out a solution. Last time I was at the dealer, thinking about trading for a gas engine truck, the dealer told me that "people just aren't buying many of these diesel engine trucks now."

Took it to the dealer Tuesday. They called Detroit to let them plug in what they found. I don't remember what the service manager said Detroit said but they think they have a fix or know where the problem is which remains to be seen. I am seriously thinking of buying extended warantee just because of this problem.
Squid I have to agree with Notrader, if guys like me weren't buying these trucks to drive back and forth to work and occassionally pull camper, boats, and other things the diesel pickup truck market would fall flat on its face. Manufactors should tell the purchaser if there are known problems or if you have to drive it a certain way. I had never heard of these trucks having these problems until i bought one and the salesman certainly didn't say anything.

Flatfoot, please let us all know what they do to "fix" your truck. I am taking mine in this next week, check engine light. Upon getting the CEL, I checked my tailpipe and it has a light coating of black soot. Normally, it is clean.

Don't mean to make this a fight, but, even though I have spent my last 35 years under the hoods of just about everything that has an engine and tires, I did know about the requirements of the 6.7l before I bought one, I also knew about the inhearent idle, turbo and DPF problems way before the forums started to show signs of discontent with L/MD emissions systems.
I did my research that is available to everyone and did not want to spend that $50k with out making sure that it was going to be money well spent. That being said, Everthing has birth defects, it does not matter who made it or where, they all have thier own specific problem areas, yes, I knew the emissions system was a very large problem area for Cummins, it is new and no one had done it like that before, I felt (through my research) that Cummins and Dodge had a plan, and it would be sucessful in the end. I have had new vehicles with birth defects that the factory engineers could not figure out (That was my specialty) I suffered through them and ultimately, they did make things right, and even improved on the original design. If you really doubt your purchase ask people the have Chevys and Fords how the dealers take care of thier problems, I have and I am really happy I made the purchase that I did, when I did.
Thank you for letting me vent, I will step off of my soap box now. Everyone that has had an issue with thier 6.7's, I hope that it does get repaired to your satisfaction within the guide lines of the usage and design of the truck.
I currently have 75,000 miles on mine and it has visited the dealer 4 times in its life, all emissions systems are intact and operating as designed.
Thank you for allowing me to bend your ears.
BTW, sorry if I offended any one, not the intent, just drive the Cummins as a 'CUMMINS'.

Thanks,
Bill

I just picked up my truck from the dealership. I asked the service manager what they had found he said that the factory had them run several test at different temperatures and they found at a certain temperature the egr valve was sticking and I think he said open. He had to order a part and it will be in Thursday. He fills confident that they found the fix. I also asked him would the 100000 mile warrantee cover it and he said it would have under the engine warrantee. I'm just glad they finally found something and hopefully the check engine light will stay off for more than a month hopefully forever.

Great news, I do hope it solves the problem. Glad there are still dealers out there that are smart enough to use thier resources to isolate and repair issues.

Took mine in yesterday. I never could get a trouble code on the odometer readout. They wrote down a code "7588" and replaced the turbo speed sensor. I read somewhere that someone said to make sure you had the J35 flash. Service manager said that there have been several updates since that flash. They also did the L16 RECALL on my truck. Supposed to be a recall on 03's thru 08 models.

Default diesel supplement available

Hi, new guy here, I have never met a car salesman I could not educate, I operate on a strict code of buyer beware. I just want to point out that Ram does have an excellent tool on their website for eduction. That is, a free, downloadable owners manual and Diesel supplement available to anybody. This supplement explains in great detail the complexities of cummins operation and driveability issues specific to the cummins engine. This should be required reading for any new or prospective cummins operator.
