Hi All,
I moved this to the troubleshooting post after seeing a bit more about how things are organized. I hope someone can help. My brake lights came on (all on their own) while the truck was parked, locked, on the front street. Nobody was in or near it and I don't have command start. I disconnected the master cylinder connector and the trailer brake controller. Noticed controller power light was on before I disconnected. Lights remained on... I brought it in my garage (20F outside) and let my programmer check for codes. It came up C1003 brake pedal switch high. I cleared the code and light still on. I disconnected the switch and light still on. I cleaned the switch and replaced it. Light still on. I disconnected the batteries. Light still on after reconnect. I started pulling fuses. Fuse 26 is brake lights. I removed it and light still on. I pulled fuse 19, trailer tow, and the lights went out... Checked for codes and 1003 still in memory so I cleared it and brake lights are now functioning normal, but the fuse 19 has to be left out. My Haynes manual is supposed to cover up to 2008, but the wiring diagrams only cover up to '05. Are there up-to-date diagrams on this site? Am I looking at a faulty vehicle control module of some sort? Brake lights seem pretty important to me so I would like to get this fixed under warranty. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. Try this link. It is Dodge's upfitter site and should have all the wiring information you need. Best I can say is work your way from the light back to the source to identify where the power is coming from. This site has all the wire color codes, splices, locations etc.

Check the position of the brake light switch, it is probably out of adjustment. Disco the switch's plug, if the lights go out, the problem is the switch. Either adjust it or replace it.

So, I replaced the fuse and checked the switch again. No happiness. When I removed the fuse the lights now refuse to go out, at all. I don't know what just happened but I was just leaving work so now I am in a position where I have to drive with a defective vehicle. I am not a happy camper...

In case anyone is interested I found the brake lights out when I got home that last time I posted so I left the fuse out for the rest of the winter. A couple of weeks ago I needed to move my trailer so I put the fuse back in and everything has been working "as advertised" since that time.
Go figure. A buddy sugested maybe water in a connector, and that sounds reasonable, but I can't tell you what connector it would have been... I hope it has cleared itself and doesn't show up again. Great motoring to all who followed this thread. Norm |
