First, I drained a little fuel from the drain to see how that worked. I found out later that there was some talk about the filter leaking at the drain after draining some of the fuel. The filter is the 3410AA model. Sure enough mine now leaks and I can't get it to stop. I called a local dealer and explained the problem to them. He say's they'll replace it under warranty. I have an appointment Wednesday morning to get the new one. I'm 1600 miles away from home and told him I want a new one, I don't want to chance it still leaking while I'm on the road. He seemed eager to please - so we'll see. I'll let you all know what happens.

I also have not been able to get much fuel from just unscrewing the fitting, but I have found if I cycle the key on to engage the fuel pump after loosening the fitting I get a nice amount of fuel (but not too much) to check for water.

Do you think you're getting the knob too tight? Is that my problem? I'm pretty sure I tightened it back the way I found it.

I also read the owners manual and unscrewed the "valve" with the hose on it and got a little bit of fuel. Screwed it back in and started the truck and covered the driveway with diesel. Loosened the valve again and retightened and this time no leak. Told the service writer at the dealership about it and he "never heard of that before."

I just returned from the Dodge dealer in Salida, CO. They replaced the filter under warranty (13, 720 miles). He said he hadn't heard of any other problems like mine, but they were happy to replace mine and did so without without hesitation. I think the problem is more wide spread than they let on.

This is an item that consumers are expected to maintain per the owners manual. Getting it too tight or not tight enough should not be an issue. It's a pretty poor design.

While I was there I asked the parts guy about the new FS2 filters, they don't have them yet at their dealership but they are on order.

They have them at geno's garage a lot cheaper then most dealerships will sell them for even with shipping. Here's the link. New Fuel Filter P/N For 07.5-10 Cummins 6.7L

As for the fuel filter and draining the water the only time you need to do that is when you get the indicator on the dash. I have never seen that in almost 70,000 miles.

I don't drain my filter. After a whole lot of years in the trucking industry I have found, unless you are buying 'El Cheapo' fuel from the no name brand station down the street to save a buck, the over all quality of fuel these days is pretty good. In years past (now I am dating myself) low lying areas and wet lands would have water migration in the fuel tanks at the filling stations, but now the rules of double walled storage tanks and monitor systems have really made that problem almost unheard of, besides most check them daily and have sensors in them to idenitfy the problem before it reaches the pump nozzle. I have my filter changed every 10K any how. Knock on wood I haven't had an issue.

Yup, the design sucks...so getting some advise on how to work around that poor design is needed...Don't ya think?

There was a sticker on the most recent Mopar filter I got that says to turn the key on for 5 seconds, then turn it off, then drain the filter.
