The axle fill holes on some Dodge Truck vehicle axles may be located considerably higher level. The fluid levels for the axles are shown in the table below.than the actual fluid level. Filling the axle until the fluid comes out of the fill hole will over fill the axle, which may cause fluid foaming. When checking fluid level or filling a rear axle with fluid, you must measure the distance from the bottom of the fill hole to the top of the actual fluid level. This can easily be accomplished using a pipe cleaner or piece of wire. Make a 90 degree bend in the wire 2 inches from the end. The wire can then be inserted into the axle fill hole to use as a dipstick. Measure the distance from the bend to the oil CORRECT FLUID LEVELS FOR RAM TRUCK 2500 - 3500: NOTE: The limited slip feature on 2500/3500 series Ram Trucks utilizes the Trac-Rite locking feature which does not require Trac-Lok additives or friction modifiers. For owners of the Ram 1500, Dakota, Durango and Aspen I've included the PDF with their requirements.

V, that looks to be the case for both the 11.5 and 9.5 for us 4X4 owners. Like you said, simply fill to the bottom of the hole and you'd be good. Plus, I would conclude that on a complete drain, there would likely be some air trapped that would lower the level very slightly after the truck was run bringing everything right in spec.

Changed mine a couple of weeks ago at 15K and filled it till it ran out, it took just short of 4 QTs. Royal Purple 75-140. The front may wait a week or so before it gets done. The gasket is a very nice piece. The 96 was filled till it ran out the hole and survived very well on Valvoline 75-140 Syn. for 170K, every 30K miles.
