My pleasure. Be sure to stick around for the EGR cleaning I'll be doing over Memorial Day weekend if the weather cooperates.

Hi, new member. I have changed my fuel filter 3 times in 23,000 miles all through the wheel well. Last time i went to new style fleetguard fs2 5 micron filter [old style is 7 micron ] i also added a glacier diesel power mk-2 micro kleen 2 micron filter kit +bigline kit between factory filter and hp pump.now i feel a lot safer, because in oregon they force us to use 2% bio diesel.

Changed mine last week. Its doable using a filter band style wrench and going under the fender and above the tire. Putting new one on was the trickest. Lifted new one up from underneath, rested it close to mounting position and then back through the fender to install.

Glad I only do it every 60,000 miles. Thats right, 60,000 miles. But I do have a filter and water seperator on my diesel tank on the ranch so it gets prefiltered as its pumped. Not a drop of water was in the bottom of filter and filter light never came on but I figured 60,000 miles on the filter was enough.

Newbie here, sure wish I would have found this thread BEFORE i changed mine. I talked the guy doing my tranny service into letting me under the truck while it was up on the rack. No way was i going to lay on the ground. I had fuel running down my arms as it was. I have a 2007 and had the dealership change the 1st fuel filter along with doing the diff. gear oil change at the recommended interval. They were done in 25 minutes and charged me a little over $300. I figured I should probably look into doing it myself. I did buy the "new" filter / cartridge from them and have been putting this off till today. Here is my question.

How do you drain the filter before you remove it. I did open the WIF but nothing came out. I losened (spl?) it with a strap wrench and finished removing by hand as the fuel was running out when I finally had it unscrewed lost my grip, dropped it which it fell onto it's side and then got drenched.
I still smell like fuel. What's the trick guys? I will use the trick of removing the wheel well next time for sure, but still don't want fuel running all over.

I appreciate you guys helpin a old man out, and helping him keep from having to live in the barn, cus mama say's I smell...

Default fuel filter screen

Squid,

You mentioned the fuel filter screen and how you were going to follow up on you pictorial presentation.

Just changed my fuel filter for the second time and could not see how to clean filter screen.

My filter was dirty but not that bad. I change every 10,000.

I might add that I always try to buy chevron or Shell diesel. Premium???I hope so.

Thanks,

Thumbs up

Thanks for this great tutorial Squid.

I am new here and a new Diesel owner. Very excited to actually learn how to do this stuff myself.

I have a 2009 6.7L 3500 HD. So far, I'm at 13,000 miles and no problems. I have been using the owner's manual for recommended service, but realize that it would be in my best interest to listen to the pros.

I read a horror story about a truck with 28,000 miles on it and still under warranty. The truck started shuttering real bad so they took it to the dealer. Glow plugs were rusted and failed due to water in the fuel. This was not covered under warranty and ended up costing $15,000 to repair.

In order to NOT have this happen, it was suggested to install a second filter/H20 separator.

Question 1: Do you have any recommendations on adding one? I do not want to have something like this happen to me. Certainly couldn't afford it, not even close.

Question 2: Is there anything else I can do in the meantime for general preventive measures to ensure the life of my truck?

Thanks again for the great info.

Gringo.

The truck has a water seperator as part of the fuel filter and I've never had water in it so don't worry about it. Whomever had this problem either was in a flood or was using Bio Diesel which is a no no with this engine.

It's great to have you here!
