I believe it works like one of those vaccuum brake bleeders, where you have a jar that collects the fluid and won't let it pass through to the pump (turbo) but yet you get air flow. That makes sense to keep the oil on the correct side of the vent.

Vis,

Blow-by is a constant problem with any turbocharged engine. While a normal byproduct of the combustion process if it isn’t contained outside the engine it will collect and gum up the valve train, turbo and most importantly the intercooler and plumbing. When this occurs it reduces the thermal efficiency of the intercooler, thus losing power and performance.

So by having a special oil catch can in place, the hose from the crank case vent which goes to the intake tube gets move into the input side of the catch can. The out side of the catch can goes to back to the intake hose.

The can is setup so that its a large air chamber and the oil has a chance to collect in the can and not the intake. The CCV when new will catch 100%, however when its saturated, oil will come through the CCV filter and collect in the hoses, and at some point will start to drip into and/or suck into the air intake.

As the engine (gas or diesel) gets older and there is more blow by, the catch can become more and more effect since it does not end up in the intake.

Background with engines .... mechanic for many years on gas & diesel (including machining parts) and semi driver Had to leave that line work when health issues arose from it and went to engineering. Also have colleagues that where diesel engine designers (some of them held patents on certain designs). Can not go a day without a complete training lesson and history at the water cooler Its like drink water from a fire hose !!

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

Got it...So the passive system is still a sealed vacuum where the oil would have to span the distance of the entrance and exit hoses. Which does not happen because of it's weight.
I understand blowby, as a Engineer for Cummins the last 7 years of my career. Thanks

I've spent 27 years in the manufacture, design and development of piston rings with TRW ( Ramsey Corp.)...My last seven years were with Cummins Piston Ring Division, were I was Engineering Manager. I know first hand the quality that goes into the design and build of these engines. I'm retired now and I don't know how many new trucks are in my future...So I chose Cummins.

Yup, you just have to remember to keep it clean...I like that idea, especially since I want to keep this truck many years to come...Thanks Garlic

It's the same principal as what I have on my compressor. Liquids are heavier then air and fall to the bottom.

Back in the 70's and 80's we ran this sort of setup because the PCV valves were so prone to failure and if you didn't you'd end up with an air filter enclosure being filled with oil.In this case I think changing the CCV filter before 40,000 miles will suffice. Besides where the heck would you mount it?

Nice. Cummins and Caterpillar are the only engines I ever care to have ! Solid and reliable, the rest, well far distance 10th

Yes, mounting in an already overloaded engine bay is a challenge ! Have not figure that one out yet .... However still collecting data

I suppose mounting it to the frame wouldn't hurt anything? That's where most bypass filters mount now.
